New .44 mag Blackhawk cylinder sticking

Hi all,

Recent purchase of a NIB .44 Mag Blackhawk, 5.5", off of Bud's. A few trips to the range without incident. This last weekend, up north on family and other business, almost without exception the cylinder sticks and will not advance without my basically pulling it forward a bit, away from the frame and towards the barrel (a very slight pressure forward). Advancing the cylinder empty isn't a problem, and neither is it a problem when using snap caps. Only with live ammo.

Have no idea what's going on. Will be stripping it tomorrow and scrubbing it, then CLPing it over night. Hope that cures it as it's brand new. If not, any ideas? Could this be one of those "could be anything" kinds of problems?

Reloads or factory is the first bread crumb to follow.

There shouldnt be more than about a thousanth of fore and aft play at all.

If it was a pistol, someone would advise shooting 500 rounds through it....

But it is apparently a brand new gun, and even the best, leave with a slight rough spot that may go away.

It almost sounds like the barrel shank may be dragging on an area of the cylinder. Look for marks on the front of the cyl.

This sounds a little different than a problem I had once(?), maybe somewhat similar, but mine was with some reloads that were just a hair's breath too long. When the cylinder tried to rotate, the tip of the bullet barely hit stopping rotation unless assisted by hand. I didn't have very many at the time, so I took a pocket knife and trimmed the lead bullet tips and then they worked fine. Other than that one time issue with ammo, I've never had any problems with any of my Rugers.
Good luck to you.

Thanks guys, helpful info. Yeah, these are just factory loads, AZ, and it only started after shooting quite a few rounds. So I'm field stripping it apart and really cleaning it and hoping that takes care of it. Just checked the cylinder, RGR, and outside of some tough blackening ringing each chamber (this is a s/s, and this stuff shows - I will have to invoke my noob status again, been 4 decades - is this normal? Do you scrub it off?), nothing there in the way of drag marks.

It's now sticking about 50% of the time, even when empty. Looking back into the (don't know what to call it) little slot where the "advance lever" comes out, it does indeed look like more gunk may have gotten back there than I thought (I Rem Action cleaned the area, but didn't field strip it and really get in there). Not sure if you guys like Rem's stuff for any action cleaning - maybe Gun Scrubber, CLP?

I had a problem with a S&W Model 64 years ago very similar to this. My cylinder wouldn't revolve with factory loads. A local gunsmith had to "polish" the forcing cone to obtain the proper clearance. I have used Never Dull cleaner to take off the residue around the face of the SS cylinder. I have been looking for some but haven't been able to find any in my area. It used to come in a blue medium sized metal can which basically contained heavy duty cotton ball-like material impregnated with a cleaning compound.

Really like the Ruger revolvers. Built like tanks and can handle both reasonable and unreasonable loads. Out of many a friend bought a new SP-101 357. It spit lead out the front of the cylinder and then stuck. Could see the cylinder was a little bit to the right at the front and the front and back of the cylinder were just off. Ruger sent him a new one which required a back ground check and a coupon for some extra Ruger stuff. And will agree about returns, the new one had one very nice trigger. Sad he got married and his wife now owns it. ;)

Had trouble with a new .44 mag Blackhawk. Called Ruger. They sent me a UPS shipping label. They had it fixed, turned around, and back to me in less than a week. Awesome customer service!!
