just bought a 38 slider with the marlin rockwell barrel. i have heard this is rare. in gun value catalogs it is confusing it shows value of the model 38 then it shows a model 40 with the marlin rockwell barrel that is listed as rare but mine in a model 38. s/n 1527 there are no letters before number. stock is in great shape no repairs and barrel is good with some deterioration of blueing because of age. everything works loads shoots and ejects great. little slack in breakdown receiver i will try to adjust internal screw to hopefully tighten up. my thoughts so far is to clean it up oil it up and store it. i can post pictures if needed it also has the octagon barrel. i would be interested on any opinions or ballpark value ect. 1st post on this site very happy to be on here. by s/n i would think it would be built in 1920.
thanks

Welcome to Marlin Owners

The Model 40 was going to be the M-R replacement for the Model 27.
The Model 27 was a larger frame pump, that was chambered for .25 Rimfire, .25-20, and 32-20.
When Marlin started making guns again after WWI, and the bankruptcy, it was called the 27 again.

The Model 38, was M-R replacement for the Model 32, that was only made late 1915 and maybe some made in 1916.
Not sure if M-R ever actually made any, but they were getting ready to make them, because the were several barrels made with the M-R roll stamp.
From what I have compiled in serial numbers, the M-R barrels were used in the 1313-1527 range. Yours is the highest M-R serial number so far, and 1313 is the lowest numbered one so far. Mine was made the same day as your.
As to the date made I have been figuring more like 1921 on mine.

If you look at the bottom of post, you will see a link too my thread.
The Model 32, 38 project.
Lot of info, and pictures of my 38's.
I need too update it one of these days though, but still should be helpful.

If you have other question just PM me or post here, or there.

thanks for your response. yes i have already checked out your 32 38 project and so far it has more complete info then others i have seen. interesting that both of ours were made the same day. so being built in 1921 makes sense. i was able to pick mine up for 350.00 so i feel like i got a pretty good deal sense nothing is broke other then the ivory ball is missing on end of barrel site. i will take and send pictures but of all the areas that i see postings on the weakness of these rifles mine in in good shape. hard to say what future holds but planning on keeping it stored and protected. for a long time have been trying to find a winchester pump and when i ran across this one and found out it was a more hard to find rifle i am more then happy with it. most people i know didn't even know marlin had a pump 22.
thanks for your help.

Forgot to mention, only shoot Standard Velocity ammo, 1150fps or less, through this gun.
The high velocity stuff didn't come out until around 1934, and the Marlin pumps were not designed to handle the extra stress, on the action.

It sounds like you got a great deal.
Most 38's go for more than that, and those with the M-R barrels usually go for more. I thick I payed about double what you payed on a couple of mine, and about the same on the other 2.

i know I'm sorry here they are i wanted to wait till the sun came out. as you can tell the blueing is deteriorated but there is not any rust. and from what i am hearing if it will have collector status you don't want to get it blued so i will leave it like it is.

when i bought this gun it was at a pawn shop and when he handed it to me he started helping someone else so i started searching gun values and seen one on gunbroker for 550.00 so i figured i couldn't go wrong plus there was some one else beside me looking at it also so i played down my license and my conceal and carry card and got it. luckily everything works on it. i just shot a whole magazine off 22 shorts thru it all my long rifle rounds are to0 strong. no misfires all loaded and ejected like they should and gun is very accurate. happy happy happy.

Don't know the actual amount, but so far the only ones that I have in my database, are all in the 1313-1527 range, and no other roll stamp in between, so at lest 200. I am assuming that M-R made up a batch of barrel, but never got around too making many, or any of them. But tge next owners then used them up, when they ran low, on the Corporation barrels. There was more then 20000 all together made of the 38, will have to look at my list when I get home, but I am thinking closer to 25000+.
So yes, M-R barreled 38 are rare.

The only thing rarer is the Model 32's.
The last one on GB, went for $3850.
But it had gorgeous wood on it.
But still a bit out of my range.;)

Usually use 0000 steel wool, with oil. Just rub lightly, and take your time.

Looks like some beautiful wood, love the dark streaks on the one side.

Hello folks. I am trying to find a carrier assembly for a 38/357 Marlin. It seems all the major suppliers are out of them. I inherited a Marlin. Unfortunately it needs the new carrier Item#8 on the blow-out, Marauder13 The dreaded double "stovepipe" jam that happened to the one I described due to the carrier to wear down and jam. The gunsmith cannot get any and say they are looking. I need to look also because it has been a few months. Any ideas where to locate one? They seem hard to come by. Thanks for any help.

You'll never find what you want asking for an off topic item inside someone else's post. You should start your own post thread, so more people will see it, and possibly respond.
