I often use this site Marlin Manufacture Dates and searched your serial number and this is the result: The year of manufacture for serial number 3905 is Before 1883.

Can you post a full picture of the Marlin? Please include some close up views of the barrel stamp and any other stamps on the rifle.

It is probably a Model 39, made around 1922-23. No pre-fix the first 3 years.

Do not shoot high velocity ammo in a rifle that old or damage could result. Remington brought out high speed .22 rimfire ammo in 1930 so any rifle made before that should use standard velocity only.
