Straight grip/square lever 336's?

Ok was just at a LGS and looked at a marlin they had on the shelf. 30-30, short barrel (maybe 18"?), straight grip and squared lever end. The rifle is very nice, I looked it over good. Serial indicates 81', and priced @ $399. Now I feel really stupid, the store was about to close and it skipped my mind to take note of the model. I'm guessing it could be a Texan? What else might it be? I'm not caught up on all models yet, I'm still learning.

I am not an expert on Texans and do not own one ...yet. However looking in my Brophy Reference book, what you describe sounds like a Texan. Straight grip, square lever, in 1982 the gold trigger was changed to a blued one and in 1983 the barrel was shortened from 20 " to 18". Prior to that it looks like they were made in 20" and some were made in 16" barrel length. So was the trigger gold or blue? In 1984 the infamous cross bolt safety started getting installed. Did it have the saddle ring on it?
someone who knows more about them, should be along to help us out. My gut says that is a good deal if its in good shape, but I really don't know the prices on Texans, this was the best I could do. good luck.

Well I just noticed a post below mine, is pretty much asking the same thing. sorry bout that. Anyway, is $399 a good buy for a Texan? The condition is very nice, only minor use. The timber is particularly pretty. It is missing the marlin bulls-eye and the sights are some sort of ghost ring/peap sight with a blade for the front sight.

Marlin did manufacture a 336 Texan (straight grip w/ squared lever) 30-30 only, with an 18 1/2" barrel in the years 80 thru 83. I purchased my 1982 version for $300 in 2009 and it's one of my favorite Marlins, especially when used as a brush rifle. This rifle is scarce and I would not hesitate buying it. $399 is a fair price, but I would shoot for $325-350. Good luck.

I do believe all straight gripped 336s are considered Texans. Even if it is or is not marked 336T on the barrel. For $399, in my area of Kansas, yea thats a nice deal. My first Marlin was a 336W (Walmart) with Birch wood and paid $400 for it. Its been my cheapest Marlin so far.

I second that! :top:

Don't know what part of the country you are in, but I would say that it is a good price. But hey it won't hurt to offer a little less, heck the worst they can say is no.
Heck I got four 30-30s now and don't need it, but would buy it any way just because I don't have a straight stocked Marlin. Good luck, and when you get it take a pic. or two for us.

Sounds like it could be a 30TK - like mine in the pics. 18.5" barrel, 1/2 magazine. Marketed for KMart years ago. Pretty much the best of the best, for some of us. Yup, would have brought it home.....

Sounds to me like further investigation on your part is needed, ha! I sure don't need another 30-30, but if decent as you say might be tempted from the description at that price, a little haggling perhaps and walk out with it. That bullseye is easy to replace and would be the least of my concerns, sights too if not liking... Go get it...

Well so I went back and bought it yesterday. Did not hesitate one bit. Has gold trigger, and some nice tiger stripe walnut on the butt. Metal is all in good condition, wood has minimal scratches/nicks, or any thing wrong with it. Only the older clear coat has aged, which is a shame because the wood would really pop on this gun with a new finish. I feel it's better to leave it all original though.

Its funny, I have bought three marlin center fires now and all three have had missing bulls-eyes. Two I have replaced and now I need to do a third. Why do they fall out so easy?

I looked and all it says is model 336. ??? Ill need to order some factory style sights because the previous owner put the ghost ring and blade sight on there. I hate those. Don't like peep style sights. can someone explain to me why people like them? To me they are harder to aim quickly and precisely.

Learning to use a peep and learning to use a scope are a lot alike. It is a learned experience. I love peeps, they are easier for my old eyes than a standard rear sight. Folks are wanting a peep sight so you should be able to unload it on here. I've got the rear sight off my 30TK - I put a ladder sight on it for ringing dingers "at distance". Also have the rear sight off my 444, but likely will keep that in the unlikely event that I sell the rifle. Getting a new stock for it and hope that changes how I feel about it.

Well, it it's a 336, it is not a 30TK, that is for sure. Sounds like a really nice piece.

Sweetwater, what ladder sight is that? I've only ever seen the shorter carbine style and wasn't aware of the longer versions. Looks good!
Don't laugh, but I found it in a box of my grandfather's stuff. Dad thought it might have been off his '92 Winchester 32WCF, as Gramp had put a peep on it early on, during the late 30's. On my Marlin 30TK, the Williams peep lines up with the bottom notch of the ladder when folded down. When the ladder is raised, it is above the peep and just a neat set-up, though not terribly sure how practical. Thanks for asking....

LightfootE, I was hoping it was one with adjustable apertures. I am sure one of the members would be interested in buying the Ashley sight if you want to sell. I can't wait to see pics of you new rifle. Texans are my favorite although I do like the old style of pistol grip on the really early rifles.

No laughing here, I think it's great! As I mentioned, I've only ever seen the shorter winchester carbine style and have thought that they would be pretty nifty on a marlin texan or cowboy. What range is it set for, for a max? I like the "unusual" firearm and/or their accessory's. Do you know who the manufacturer was at all?

I took a good look at my 94W and the ladder site on my 32WSPL is 1 5/8" tall and graduated to 400 yards. The ladder on my 30TK is 2" tall and graduated from "2" to "10" - Makes the fold down site "1" and then tip the ladder up for the rest. I'm thinking this might be off one of the mil-surp rifles that got sporterized, so graduations would be yards or meters. I couldn't find any other markings of any kind. I did not take it off, suppose there could be something on the underside. The dovetail was a perfect fit. Added a couple closeups.
