Just purchased an ugly Marlin 45-70 yesterday ........... good report

Yesterday I purchased a Marlin 1895SBL which is, to me, one of the ugliest leverguns ever produced. I do not like stainless leverguns and that rail is ugly as sin.

That being said, the quality on this Remington manufactured rifle blew me away .............. it compares favorably to every JM marked Marlin I own and is actually better than a few of them.

The stock to metal fit is outstanding, sights are straight. I pulled the bolt and looked at the chamber and throat (I have a polished tube with an optic that works great for this) and they show no flaws whatsoever. But the part that really impressed me was the smoothness of the action and the way it fed, extracted and ejected ............. butter smooth from the box.

I have not fired it yet so those factors remain to be seen.

I am super happy with the apparent quality at this point and here is the good part ...... NIB price was $723 plus tax. Remington manufactured guns will not be given the cold shoulder by me in the future unless an inspection proves them unworthy.

But it's still ugly.

You guys across the pond don't realise just how lucky you've got it! :hmmmm: Over here (UK) Marlin UK are selling those "ugly rifles" at ÂŁ1099, which I've just typed into the google currency converter and it's told me that at today's exchange rate, that's US $1844.35!!! :ahhhhh:

I bought my "JM" XLR about five or six years ago and paid ÂŁ800 = $1343 at today's exchange rate!

"Just purchased an ugly Marlin 45-70 yesterday..."

As Sheldon Cooper would ask, "That's sarcasm, right?"

Nice rifle!

My bet is once rounds are fired, and target inspected, it will be much more pretty.... ;)

One man's definition of ugly, is another man's vision of beauty.

Your ugly rifle, is a thing of beauty to me!

I have several stainless Marlin leverguns, half JM Marlins and half Remlins... I love them all.

Beauty is the eye of the beholder!!!

+1 on the quality of the latest Marlins.
I really worried about buying my GBL after all the disparaging stuff I'd seen about Remington's takeover.
I couldn't be happier with mine unless it was stainless and it had the shorter Scout rail om it
To each his own! Stainless aint happening but the rail will soon my old eyes are crying for a scope.

Nice rifle, good price, Will

+1 on the quality of the new 2014 models! I just got a new 1895sbl 45/70 a week ago, and i can find no fault with it. Close inspection provided me with great satisfaction. The wood to steel fit is excellent, the finish and staining of the wood are awesome, the steel is polished very well, and the receiver/lever action is very smooth. I haven't field tested the gun yet, but so far, i'm one happy camper. This is my first Marlin lever gun, and i'm very glad that i made this purchase. There's a good video on this gun as well as Marlins in general at gunblast.com.

Hey, plankspanker, welcome to the club!!

Glad you guys are getting good quality with your new Marlins. Personally, I like stainless a lot...and I like blued a lot.

She's a real looker in my book! Glad to see you got a good one. I never thought of painting one black, but that could add to its tactical appeal for sure.

Like you, I could never warm up to the rails or scout scopes. I know they work, but they just don't look right to me.
