Hi,

I've just agreed to buy a Marlin 39A, marked as a '39 Century Ltd.' and I'm trying to date it. (I've attached a photo, but I don't get the actual rifle for a week or so yet).

I've been told it was made in the '70s, and it doesn't have a crossbolt safety, but the serial no. is 36125.

If I take the first two digits of the serial no. as '36' I can't find anything, but if I assume there is an 'implied' '0' at the beginning that would make it 1997 manufactured? ....but if it's '97 why no safety?

All comments and help appreciated.

Sir, What you are soon to be the owners of is in fact not a regular 39A, but rather a 39 Century. These were manufactured by Marlin to commemorate/honor their 100 years in business. I believe they were only made in the year 1970. I am by no means Marlin expert and there are many here much more learned than I, but I am fairly confident in my above assessment of your pending rifle. It is a nice piece and a good one to have. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy.

The were 34197 Century Limited's made in 1970. I believe they were the only model of 39A manufactured in 1970. They have their own serial number sequence. Mine says No. 064xx on the top tang. With the large number made they were in the catalog for several years. Hope this helps. The cross bolt safety wasn't added until 1988 so the Century Limited is quite a bit earlier that the change.

I'm trying to get a grasp about presentation Marlins. I have a 39 Century LTD Presentation Rifle. The Serial number is 77. It was Presented to Robert L. Harris By the Connecticut Gun Guild for Service to the club. He was the Secretary/ Treasurer for 2 plus decades. The rifle is Flat new (never Been Cocked) with 3X wood and very Nice Patina on the Butt Plate and Forend cap, There is no Plaque to muck up the gorgeous stock. It is factory inscribed to him on the right flat next to the rear sight above the hand guard. It sat in the box on a shelf in his store (Cornwall Bridge Firearms) from the day it was presented to him until his passing in 1998 when my father (Bob's Best friend) and I purchased the contents of the shop in accordance with his will. The rifle Hung on the wall behind My desk (along with a Zane Gray that was presented to my father) in our gun shop until 2018 when I retired and has since hung on my home office wall. I have the Box in My attic. I am just trying to see if I can get an Idea of how many of these Presentation grade LTD's may have been made and their approx. worth just to list in my insurance inventory. At this point I have no desire to sell it. I would just like to gather the information.... Respectfully... Bruce Kaufman
