Hey there all ....

I have a 45 70 and was looking at something fast and light for snap shooting pigs we keep walking up at close range.... I have a 30-30 too but i was wondering if anyone had shot with the Rossi 454 Casull lever gun ?

I know the cartridge quite well as i used it in a handgun to shoot metal silhoette once when a mate lent me his at a competition... (it was a bit much in a handgun i thought as i normally used a Ruger Super blackhawk .44mag with 10.5 inch barrel which i thought was plenty!).

Anyway, my thoughts were that i could load up with 45 LC's for small pigs and the Rossi can pack in about 10 shots before reloading..... recoil will not be an issue .... and the full house loads come close to the 45-70 should i need them....

I had a rossi .357 mag as a lad and then when i got married i gave it to my wife who LOVED it - i just didnt really bond with it and thought the cartridge was a bit anaemic but reckon it too would be a good close up pigging rifle .... Pity it got sold when the wife stopped using it...

My mind keeps wandering back to the casull though ....:hmmmm:

I've no experience with a 454 Casull. Why not just use a heavy loaded 45 Colt? For that matter a Guide Gun. Course if you just want a new gun, just do it! Steve

Hey stevewhr, the allure of the casull is the ability to load from mild to wild in a much lighter rifle that holds way more ammo than i can cram into my 45 70.... and also... I want a new rifle cos i do...:flute: i have looked at .44mags too .... its just that the casull seems to cover more ground ... there are 2 IMI Timberwolfs in 44mag for sale too but man they are expensive !!

I had a Rossi 92 Trapper in .45 Colt, with heavy cast bullet loads it was all I wanted. I shoot a couple of Marlin 45-70s (with heavy loads) and a .338 Win Mag bolt gun, but that little Rossi 45 was in a league of it's own as far as recoil. At least the .454 Rossi's have a recoil pad.

The little .45 Trapper was very accurate though, amazed me that I could shoot it as well as I did considering the iron sights, my old eyes, and the hefty recoil.

I've shot one. My brother has one in stainless, he bought it to go with his Taurus Raging Bull 454. It's a neat little lever gun, shoots quite well. He put on tru-glo sights. If I wanted a lever gun in 454, I'd definitely buy one.

I think you already have the best caliber in 45-70 for anything pigs to buffalo especially in something like a guide gun,but if you want a reason to buy a 454 casull I say go for it!I have always wanted one in a super redhawk, but now leaning towards an encore in 454.

I have both the marlins GBLand SBL and the 20" Rossi 454 and a Rossi 45lc trapper, and the Rossi's are much lighter and faster than the marlins. The 454 is ..well a a454 casull with about 300ft per second more muzzle velocity than the handgun. The 45lc can be loaded pretty warm so it can come pretty close to 454 velocity. The trapper version is really light and handy, I out a butt cuff on it with about 3/4" closed cell foam in it to ad some length of pull and soak up some kick. The 20" 454 rossi comes with a recoil pad. I like all 3 but if I were to be doing a lot of walking give me the trapper with some heavy 300gr. loads.
Of course if you can find one get a 16" Rossi 454 and then you can shoot both the 454 and the 45lc.

I also own a SBL and GBL and 454 Rossi. Used to have 2 of them, kept the 20, sold the 16 for 100 more than a paid for it. both the Rossi's are great guns. I was looking for a 357 a while back and was willing to go the route of a the Rossi but no one had any. Ended up finding a old Marlin 1894 for a GOOD price, bought it on the spot.

I think you will like ti alot. FYI, check out Steves gunz for parts and upgrades. I've done a bit to my 20" and it is MUCH lighter than the 1895 SBL/ GBL.

I've got a Rossi M92 in .454 Casull with a 20" barrel. It is a very nice and handy gun. I have not shot it for over a year or so, but I'm sure it'll do it's part.

I like it lots and never regretted that I bought it.

A buddy of mine had a 16" in .454, but man, that one was LOUD !

I've got two of the Rossi 454's, 16" stainless and 20" blued. Both will feed 45 colts easily and are more accurate than I am. Other than a mule deer, I haven't taken any game with them, but the 454 performed as expected with factory Hornady 300 gr 454 ammo, big hole in, bigger hole out. They are light, easy to carry rifles and I have had zero issues with either one of them. I liked the 20" so well, as soon as I saw the stainless 16", I was grabbing my wallet. DP

I used to own a Puma (Rossi stamped) in .480 Ruger. On a cosmetic note the lumber was made from the softest "hardwood" I've ever seen and dented/scratched very easily. On a more important note, it would fail to feed several different kinds of ammunition and after about fifty rounds it wouldn't feed any. When it would feed I had to hold the rifle perfectly level to do so. I determined with professional assistance that the inside feeding guide rails that guided the round into the chamber were faulty. After about nine months of trying to get these parts replaced (one on each side of the receiver walls) by contacting both Rossi and Legacy Sports Inc. I gave up and was luckily able to return the rifle and get credit with the distributor, Davidson's, whom I bought the rifle from.

That said, it shot well as a single shot, but I won't be buying any more guns from anyone I can't get parts from easily. I will be buying more from Davidson's, though.

I really like the .454 cartridge using it in a Super Redhawk and would love to have a lever action in that caliber if any were made by an American manufacturer I could trust.

Thanks for all the feedback guys .... I must say i am not hearing too many really negative comments here ... I can pick up a 20 inch .454 Rossi Lever rifle for Au$575.00 which is really very cheap for a new rifle in this class. I am REALLY battling hard not to go in and buy it! I have one last option ... i know of a nice older 45 70 Marlin at a tame gun dealer close buy that I am going to try to barter with ... I have a nice accurate Stevens .22 Mag i dont use anymore and I want to see if he will trade it in on the Marlin... if not, Im gonna grab the Rossi ! After all.... it was my Birthday yesterday and i never really bought myself a "to dad...from dad" present !!

From another aussie - go the 45-70! After all, you did post this in a marlin 45-70 forum. I've got an older model Marlin 45-70 (1895SS) and it's one slick beast. Only just starting to put rounds through it but I'm sure looking forward to hammering some pigs and goats with it. Will feel confidant in all situations against any animal, I know the 454 isn't a slouch - well it is in fact when compared to full house 45-70. And old Marlins are very well made rifles.

Although I have a mate here with a 357 rossi and it's a nice gun - very light and handy (as would a 454 be) so either way you're a winner!

Hey 1640,

I've got a Guide Gun in .45-70 which I bought in 2010. It don't hurt having both, eh mate ? :)

I like the Rossi for its light weight and high capacity, and still being able to dish out. I wish sometimes Marlin would have made a .454 Casull on the 1894 frame.

no sure doesn't when it comes to levers! And I gather the 454 rossis are on special now so maybe the rossi now and a 45-70 later - i'm often seeing 1895SS in used guns for $800, they hang around for ages so i'm sure they'd take offers. Or guide guns come up occasionally for a bit more too. Before you 'mericans pass out from these prices - let me just say welcome to our world!

moonbat60 - do you think the 1894 would take 454 casual pressures? I've heard they're not the strongest and 454 is very hot

I like the 454.Its got a lot to offer in a little package.
Id like to get one of them NE arms cowboy single shot 45 colt that has the cresent stock and short bar.
And have it rebored to 454,for the same reason. To be able to shoot both the 45 colt, and 454.
