Ohio DNR has proposed to add the 450 marlin to their list of legal deer cartridges.

OK, I'm your Huckleberry. What is a 44 belted bodeen?

I'm going to regret this....

Jeff,

A belted straight walled 44 cal wildcat that Jedman and I built last year. Brass length about 2.83" and a water capacity of almost 100 grains. It will launch a jacketed 340g bullet way faster than is neccessary to dispatch a whitetail.

450 Marlin now approved for deer in Ohio. Just how big are deer getting in Ohio? ;) More freedom of choice the better.

Just a matter of time, so said the person in charge of writing the laws for ODNR last year at the open house.

He planned on using a 45/70 the first year. Owns a 450 and liked knowing others wanted it on the list. He probably never heard of the 44 Belted Bodeen and doesn't own one.

Bikerbean, Go shake his hand at the District on Dublin Road in Columbus March 7th., introduce yourself and bring an example, uncharged cartridge, and your data.

Bikerbean and myself were at the open house last March to try to help get the cause to get CF rifles allowed during gun season.
There was talk of allowing the same cartridges that we're currently allowed in a handgun to be allowed in a rifle.
That would be any strait walled cartridge .357 cal and larger. That would have made the 450 Marlin, 44 Bodeen, and even 458 Lott legal.
They chose to make it more complicated and only list what they wanted, but really 41 long colt, and a few rare others in favor over something way more common like the 445 Super Mag :hmmmm:

Redbearcat7,

I think if I am going to try and get ODNR to add a cartridge it wouldn't be a wildcat. As Jedman said, the 445 SM would be a good one and I would like to see the 405 win approved. I do plan on going to one of the open houses, probably in Findlay.

Is there any verifiable truth to the rumor that the 30-30 is being looked at as well? I have spoken with two people, whom I would trust in matters like this, that have stated this has been talked about. The reasoning in both cases was how many hunters already own one and the unending quest from our deer biologist Mike Tonkovich to kill every deer in the state.

If dear ole biological Mike had his way we would only get one shot, at one deer, if we were lucky enough to see one per season.

Sounds like good news for you guys. I have to say again though, I just don't get the "logic" of that law there in how they decide what's legal and what's not... :hmmmm:

Logic and the ohio DNR are mutually exclusive. I think it is a list of cartridges owned by ohio DNR employees. I am just glad I can hunt with something besides a slug gun.

This is the best news I have heard! I guess the 1895MR I purchased brand new in 2005 will finally get some regular use!

We have a lot of guys from Ohio and surrounding areas looking for .450 marlins since this all went down.. Driving prices up a bit especially near the PA Ohio border.

I lived in NY and the idiots up there are beyond stupid! It was shotgun only but you could use any caliber handgun you wanted...DUH! I think now they have opened it up to rifle, not sure. The logic has always escaped me, a shotgun slug fired in the air may not go as far as a rifle but the chances of hitting someone is the same near or far and a rifle bullet will breakup if it encounters a branch where a slug is more likely to keep going!
