336 experts how about some help.

If you are searching gunbroker or the other Internet sites how do you tell which 30/30 336's are long barrel ? M 36's with "A" are 24 inch. Does the same number protocol apply to 336's? Am looking for a 24 inch for Cowboy Lever Action Silhouette. Last question Were any 336's made without barrel bands like the short magazine tube 36A's ? 36A's I have seen so far are pretty rough need a good bore.

Yes, you essentially answered your own question - the Marlin model 336A (sometimes referred to as the "rifle" model) were all offered with a standard 24" barrel since introduction back in the late 1940s. I don't know the specifics of the Cowboy series. Older 336SC (sporting carbine) rifles had a short mag tube and no foreend cap or barrel band - these were 20" barrels however (check those prior to 1957?).

One seller on gunbroker has TWO very clean 336a models (in 30/30) for sale...with a pretty decent BUY NOW price....about 2 days left. I missed a nice one several weeks ago, but worked 3 extra shifts this week so I might be able to borrow against my "impending mad money" for one of them. For any of you other snipers, I want the one with the cheaper BUY NOW.

I have a 24 inch Cowboy 30/30, as well as a 20 inch RC and an 18.5 inch TS; but every time I see the 24 inch 336a, I want one. MARLIN-ITIS and VAQUERO-ITIS combined with custom boolit mold buying are expensive vices....but so are cigars, books and other necessities of life.

Are you looking at one of the .32 specials? One is listed @ $475 and these have been up for sale for some time in GB. The one you mention ("K") prefix does look pretty clean. I'm not sure why it hasn't sold. May have been refinished but I'm not sure, you might ask the seller some questions and go from there.

On further inspection, I see that it has the original finish but it appears the former owner carved his name or initials into the bottom of the receiver and someone tried to sand or remove these initials. I didn't see that initially. This would definitely take the value down and at a buy now price of $495 you can find a much better example for the money. I wouldn't spend that on that particular rifle.

It has to be a 30/30 and since I plan to use if for match shooting bore is critical. Not being a collector the rest is unimportant except no sense paying a lot for something rough. Will change the sights too, Lyman 17A front Lyman 66 rear which even though reversible shame to alter a nice collectible.

Guy locally has a 36A that's been drilled for scope mounts and pretty rough overall. Nice Bore though. 425 dollars and it's a 250 gun that could be a very good match rifle. Hate to pay too much because I will probably sell it after this summers match. We only shoot Rimfire and Pistol Caliber Cowboy Silhouette at my club so any full size rifle I buy is a one match outfit. If it's right 400 or so is not too much to have in a good 24 inch barrel gun seems to me. Considering my intended use going for the best conditon at a higher price is not a good idea. I have my eye on those gunbroker 30/30's that I found with you guys help. They got lost in all the carbines listed.

Marlin 30/30's made up well over half the field 2010 CLA Nationals and won all the prizes too.

Thanks for the advice

I'm looking for a 30/30...I have several other models PLUS bullet moulds and brass. What I want is a nice shooter grade, not a collector that is as old or older than I am! Like boats, I'll install a LYMAN 66, 17A and a folder or blank in the rear sight dovetail. A couple of my step kids can appreciate my toys and will enjoy them down the road as much as I have.

So far, so good on iron sights BUT I'm 62 and have type 2 diabetes...and family history on both sides with grandparents, aunts/uncles, cousins and recently younger brother. Working in power plants for 40 years with exposure to astbestos, coal dust, fly ash, etc. doesn't help much either BUT it paid well, so.....There's a bunch of us here that are getting older and having health issues.

There's a chinese quote "May you live in interesting times" and I don't think it was meant as a blessing.

Cowboy Lever Silhouette is limited to Iron sights, look on the firing line at a match most of the guys are over 60. It can be done but need a few tricks to get a good sight picture. One of which is a long sight radius. I don't think 24 inch 336's are more accurate than 20 inch guns but that front sight a few more inches away makes a big difference. And they weigh more which is an advantage too.

I used to shoot Trapdoor matches with a fellow 80 years old, he often won. Had to set his sight with magnifying glass. Watching, he would settle into positon close his eyes, Open and boom ! shot would go off. He told me once the reason why, he only got a sharp front sight for a few seconds.

LIFE IS GOOD.

I got the bid on the 336a 30/30 from the guy on gunbroker....money order and FFL headed his way after work tomorrow. On vacation until the 3d of January....weather don't look promising for shooting, but I've got lots of lead and two boolit moulds for the 30/30s and 500+ empty casings.

Big decision time: Do I install a 5D Williams out of the parts box or steal a #66 Lyman off the 45/70 Cowboy in the safe...unfortunately don't have a spare #17A front sight.

While the Williams sights are good, just as good as a Lyman, I am setting up my 3 gun Cowboy lever outfit with 66's and 17A's Just better in a week long match to have eveything work the same way. My spotter and shooting partner is doing the same thing, with Williams on his 3 rifles.

Much as I hate to do it the Lyman 1A Tang sight is coming off my 39A, one I have owned for 50 years, for the sake of uniformity.
