What's your favorite peep sight?

Turning 50 in a couple weeks, and decided to treat myself to a new rifle. This morning I ordered a "GASP" Henry All Weather in 45-70. Heresy on this board I know. Flame away. I can take it. Lol.

Anyway in keeping with the all weather theme, I don't want an optic on it, I'm going with a peep sight, but which one? The RPP looks very nice, but it's out due to the wings. Not interested in the XS. The Skinners have a great reputation, and are still in the running, but right now I'm leaning toward this williams rear
with a RPP green front. I'd like to hear from y'all. What are you using? What's worked best for you? What hasn't worked for you? Maybe some other brands that I'm not aware of. Thanks in advance for your input.

That is what I put on my 1895cba. A Williams WGRS .
At the range today, I took out the appiture and used it like a ghost ring.
I set the elevation as low as I could.
Knowing the load I was able to hit the swingers at 50, 100, a Zane 150 yards.
That front bead looks like a man hole cover out at 150 meters.

Henrys are very nice rifles.
I have a Frontier 22LR on order to use as a SASS trainer.
Cheaper to shoot than 38/357, and just as much fun.

The Williams in your photo is on my TK rebore to .375. Compact, light weight, adjustable, and not overpriced. Two of my Marlins have a classic steel Lyman on one and a Redfield on the other. AC

That's a pretty solid endorsment. Nobody buys 6 of something if it aint working well for them. I ordered a WGRS this morning. Nice clean look, good reviews, and I like how far back on the reciever it sits. Price is great too. Thanks for your input everyone.

On my Guide gun 45/70 and my 450 Marlin I have XS ghost ring peeps. I added a red fiber optic front sight to the 450 and I must say that's the ideal peep sight setup for me. Works great. I sight in my peep sights at only 50 yards for the ADK hunting I do.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I'm having trouble finding an answer to a peep sight question!

I got a beautiful Marlin 422 Varmint King today and it has the front sight hood, but no peep sight. I read that this rifle came with a Lyman peep sight and I am looking to verify that information and acquire an original. This gun currently has a Lyman All-American 6X scope mounted, fyi.

Please feel free to move this comment or point in in the right direction! Thanks so much.

P.S. My favorite peep sight is the one that comes installed on the 03a3. :)

Welcome aboard doodledogdad. No problem with you asking your question in this thread. Hope you get the answer you're looking for. How bout some pics of that rifle? I've never seen one. What caliber is it?

I picked up my Henry yesterday. Will post pics after I get the peep and RPP green fiber front installed. Nice rifle. Can't wait to send some lead down range.

I had a BA Marlin in 222 years ago. I forget the model but have seen a few at shows and they were all 222s. Mine had 6x Unertil Condor scope when I bought it. Lyman peep was probably a #48, should be listed in catalogs of around 1958 print for model.

I went to the range today to sight in my 1895GBL with a Williams FP336 rear peep. I left the stock front ramp sight on. Some people say that you need to change the front blade when you install a peep sight. The third target on the right shows that works just fine. I bore-sighted the rifle using a 1" dot at 25 feet. In the beginning, it was shooting 7" low at 50yds. I walked it up in three shot increments, adding eight clicks on the adjusting screw for each three shots. When it was shooting about an inch high, I cinched down the adjusting screw and called it good. It should be right on at 100yds. and an inch or so low at 150. I can't see shooting more than 150yds. with a peep sight. The load that I used for the sight-in is 38.5gr. of IMR4198 behind a Hornaday 350gr. round nose.

The second target is a combination of two loads...300gr. Sierra hollow point using 39.2gr. of IMR4198 and a 350gr. Oregon Trail lead flat point using 32gr. of IMR4198. The Sierra shot a little high and the Oregon Trail shot a little low...and inch or so for each. The two shots at the top of the second target were to see of I could put a shot on each side of the center line of the target just for fun with the Oregon Trail, knowing that I had to shoot them a little high to put them where I wanted them. So, I haven't settled on bullet type yet. I suspect the choice comes down to what I am hunting.

I officially admitted defeat today. I can't consistently hold better than about 3" groups at fifty and 6"-8" at 100 with a peep. That just won't cut it. I owe the critters I hunt better than that. I ordered an Ultradot Matchdot from Midway this evening, along with some Tally low rings.

I think I could do much better on targets with a thinner front sight and smaller aperture, but such a sight would be pretty useless in low light hunting situations. The fire sight front I have installed now covers about 8" at 100yds. It's just too much, even with a 6 o'clock hold. I went with the Matchdot because it lets you select a 2,4,6, or 8 moa dot, and with no ocular bell hanging out there, I can mount it low and still easily thumb the hammer back. If the Henry had a CBS, I would have gone with a traditional low power variable.

My first gun, an Ithaca Model 49 lever action single shot 22 was a gift on my 13th birthday.
Shot this gun many years, considered it accurate only up to 40 yards.
Old eyes started having trouble with the fine bead open sight so I installed a Williams FP.
I replaced the elevation slotted screw with a thumb screw for easier on the fly adjustments.
I can now consistently hit a Freon jug at 200 yards, adjust elevation and hit steel targets at 100, 50, back out to 200.
Williams peep totally transformed the capability and fun for this gun.
