What did I forget?

Recently there was an online discussion of the 30/30 lever gun for personal defense. One guy took the opportunity to proclaim the 30/30 as a feeble old relic, totally inadequate and badly outclassed for any purpose by more modern cartridges. He asserted that the only reason it hung on was because manufacturers were too lazy to introduce more modern lever gun cartridges and apparently many hunters were too ignorant to know better.
I responded by listing the "more modern" cartridges for which lever guns have been chambered, namely: 7x30 Waters, 307, 356, & 375 Winchesters, 308, 338 & 450 Marlin as well as original contemporary 25/35 & 32 Special. All of those are pretty much dead in the water while the 30/30 remains at the top of the charts because it does ever thing any whitetail hunter needs done within 200 yards, does it very well without excessive recoil or muzzle blast and is absolutely reliable because all it's wrinkles were ironed out long ago.
Have I overlooked any other failed replacements?

“ Feeble old caliber “..... I guess deer are harder to kill now than they were 100 years ago. My guess is that the skill of most modern hunters does not match those of 25, 50 or 100 years ago.

Every couple of years some youngster brings up thee idea that the 30-30 (and all other old timers) are too feeble to be effective. I've been seeing this crap for about 50 years - but the 30-30 is still around. Makes me wonder about the kid spouting such wisdom - is he still around - or gotten any smarter?

I still shoot them, reload for them, and hunt with them. Win 94 and Mar 336 all the way baby. And don't let anyone tell you that the 30 30 is not a capable cartridge. It is capable of taking game larger than whitetail deer, when used within its range capabilities, and proper bullet selection. Oh yeah, and you got to be able to hit where you aim, that is equally important.

I have a neighbor who is a wonderful man and I consider a friend. he is also an accomplished and seasoned deer hunter. we had a conversation the other day about calibers and deer. the 30-30 came up, he began to tell me how sorry it was as a deer caliber! he said he saw a man shoot a deer 5 times with one and the deer ran off! I looked at him and said "Harry" please. he said well maybe the man missed some of the shots, they found no blood. I was thinking how could anybody believe such bull! I said yea he missed all of the shots! people get something in there head and believe what they heard all there lives. I heard the same thing form people but thank God I had a daddy that knew and taught me better.

one day me and my brother and an old friend of ours were standing outside the church meeting house, there was a field across the road about 200yds long. the old man was a retired SLED officer. "SC law enforcement division" who knew guns very well, "or was supposed to" he said a 30-30 was no good and had no power. he said if he stood at the back of that field and a man shot at him he would be out of danger! we looked at him and laughed, my brother said if you stand there and mike shoots at you it will be instant death! he looked at us like we were crazy,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Well people have been proclaiming the funeral of the 30/30 for a century now. In the book "The American Rifle" author Townsend Whelen said the 30/30 was a perfectly adequate rifle for deer and black bear but he would not advise the sportsman to purchase one in light of so many new developments and better cartridges now available. The only exception he said was for those hunting northern Canada where no other cartridges are available. That book was copyrighted 1918, one hundred years ago.

one thing that has made the 30-30 popular is the name. Winchester and 30-30, the 2 words just go together, and the numbers 30-30 was known all over the world and still is. if you mention 32 special to 99% of modern day hunters they will have no clue what you are talking about, although it is every bit as good as a 30-30 and in my humble opinion even better. but it don't have that 30-30 Winchester ring to it. when the 30-30 came along in 1894 it was a revolutionary marvel. with blistering speed for the time. it was loaded with the new smokeless powder. it also could shoot further and more accurate at a distance than most anything of the day. it will be alive and kicking long after we all are 10 toes to the sun,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

When I was shooting at an indoor range with my recurve a young little know it all asked me if anyone could kill a deer with a bow like my recurve, especially a buck. I mentioned to him that Native Americans killed buffalo with lesser bows. That the bow similar to mine has been around about 5000 years unlike his compound. There was a writer that wanted to get traditional muzzle loaders banned for muzzle loading hunting as they were so inferior to the modern muzzle loaders. This clown was a real winner. It isn't just center fire rifles that idiots knock.
