Well.... me, Cleat and the Mountie found ourselves out in the food chain again today. This has been a long, very wet Spring. I’m giving serious thought to changing my outfit from a U-Pick sagebrush ranch to terraced rice paddies. Cleat has been hanging inside to avoid the heavy rain and hail that blows through every ten to twenty minutes. In between squalls I slipped out to test a few 38-55 loads that have been sitting on the bench for a week. Figured that a trip to paint dingers would give the Big Guy a leg stretch and I wouldn’t mind a walk as well.

Grabbed the Mountie and checked the magazine tube. Topped it off with more of the 40 grain solids. After the Peep Incident, I’ve gone to the bigger bullet and never looked back.

We were through the North fence and easing on out to the 300 yard dinger, Cleat taking the point as he always does. We hadn’t gone 30 yards when he is looking back at me with the “There’s something hinkie out here” look. I dismount the Mountie off my shoulder and rack a fresh 40 grainer into the chamber. That’s when I see them too. A pair of scout mushrooms. Cleat has wheeled around behind me as he has been trained to do before the shooting starts. I get those two and a couple more making a break for a bigger cow flop.

We continue on out to the 400 yard dinger. Cleat back on the point, alert and watchful. I’ve got a round chambered and the Mountie on halfcock. That’s when he attacked. From just 25 yards coming out of the tall grass. The perfect ambush. Cleat side stepped out of the way and circled out of the line of fire. I shouldered the Mountie and took the only shot I was going to get before it was on me. The shot proved perfect and the huge Bull Mushroom was DRT. Just a warning now. Ya’ll be careful out there as these things may be everywhere. Best regards. Wind

This is why I still live in the city...............all I have to contend with are dopehead gang-bangers and irrascible yuppies, nothing dangerous like your Feral Fungi!

Nice shooting, by the way. Did you save the pelt?

Wind,
I'm proud to see you two made it out with your hide. That dog of yours is a real life saver, you owe him an extra bone in the bowl for alerting you to potential dismemberment.

Where do you live? With the kinds of threats to your life and property you are constantly facing why not move?

Thank God for the BIG bore Mountie you were packing.

Wind - As I have an example of the wonderful woodworking you are capable of, have you ever thought about adapting a French bayonet to fit some of your Marlin collection? I understand most of the French bayonets have never been used and mint examples can be had rather cheaply. For the close-in, serious social work that befalls you at your outpost, I would think a mounted bayonet would be an added comfort. If Cleat ever gets angry at you he may leave you on your own on one of these trips, instead of always walking point. With rabid feril funji add to the mix I am thinking about switching from my lever action J.C.Higgins (marlin clone of their model 57) to my marlin model 60 for the firepower. I remember the "peeps" incident. Where will it ever end? Having flashbacks to my youth during the Southeast Asia war games.
BTW sure wish you could send some of that rain down our way. Last measurable rain was early February. The local rabbits have started carrying canteens, and traveling in pairs for safety. The half empty canteen is a give-a-way. You can sometimes hear the water sloshing even before you see the little critter. Shenandoah

Whoa! You sure you should be out with only the Mountie? Cleat got lucky by my take.
Anything smaller than him coulda ended up shroom fertilizer.
Them shrooms are taking smaller, dumber animals like poodles and cats around here.
Somehow the shrooms just lull them into a forever DIRT-NAP.

Hey there ya’ll --

MontanaMan -- Rabid gophers is one thing, but Mushrooms is something else entirely that needs a whole bunch more killing power. Them 40 grainers is just the ticket.

PJ -- The exit hole totally runint the Feral Fungi’s pelt – for sure. I don’t like touching them things no way anyhow.

BJM -- Be very careful my friend. You get to close to your kind of Mushrooms you’ll be real easy to spot, even on a moon-less night!!

six_gunz and Catherine -- Thanks for the kind words.

BUBSDAD -- I’ve got a lot of blood, sweat and tears in building this place. Me and the Mountie ain’t budgin’ on no Peep’s or Mushroom’s account.

Shenandoah -- I like the bayonet idea. Could also be used like a sand spike for my surf rod, there’s not much to lean a rifle on around here whilst painting dingers.

h d hawg’r -- Just take a couple of Moose Drool’s before bed and call me in the morning. You’ll be fine.

LT -- It’ll take more than a raggedy herd of Peep’s to take me and Cleat out. He still keeps looking for the little yellow buggers even though we haven’t seen any for a month now. Heaven help it if he finds a straggler.

GJinNY -- Cleat is one smart critter. He’s done good with the likes of rattlesnakes and cougars. I still worry some, but he seems to handle himself well. I’m so sorry about your cat. Looks like they used the “Acme Pizza Disguise” and got it to take a bite or two. Devious Devils, that’s for sure.

Best regards. Wind

Wind,

I feel I ought to warn you! My buddy down here tells me that those "Cow flop" rooms taste like S--T! :p ::) ;D

Wind,

I have got say that I am very worried about you. Not too long ago there was the outbreak of Peeps and now you have the Ferocious Fungi trying to ambush you.

It is very good, and probably the only reason that you are still with us, that you have Cleat covering your back! You are very fotunate to have such a great companion. :)

Holy cow, Wind, you sure live in a dangerous place! I though I had it pretty bad on Monday when a pair of rabid-looking pink peeps attacked me, but luckily I was able to take them out with a barrage of .22s and a few well-placed 12ga shells.

BJM, you sure have some mean looking fungi around your place. Those mushies look mighty ornery compared to the ones growing here.

GJ - Holy Oak Massachusetts, that ole boy looks like he's holding one that calls for a 45-70 or 450 Marlin. That is a biggin' for sure. Shenandoah

GJinNY -- Dang!! I almost hope that is a giant 'shroom and not some poor guy with a really ugly legless wife doing some kinda Jitter-Bug dance flip move. In any case I just moved a cartridge belt full of 38-55's closer to the rifle. Moby 'Shroom, now where did I put my harpoon? Worried Wind

PJ I kinda thought that was an amanita myself when I first saw it but I'm still not sure, the cap is a slightly different shape but everything else is right. Amanita toxins are deadly and there is no known antidote as far as I know. They kill by dissolving the internal organs of the victim very slowly. I think I'll pass on eating them even if some folks do and think they're safe.....grin. I'll stick to morels and shaggy manes.

You and Cleat got sand. I just couldn't live on the edge like you do. All we have are these little MR's southwest of where we hide out ...

I understand ours are nuthin' compared to the dangers of the infamous Bull Mushroom (scientific name - Feral Fungi per PJ) in your neck of the woods.

Picture don't look as good as being up close (7 MI) from one. They are loud and what a shock wave. You can see it comming. And you don't stand up if you do the ground will come up and get you.
