Vintage Bushnell Sportview 4x - Thoughts?

It seems like 3 or 4 of the used rifles I've bought over the last two years, mostly 80's models, have come with Bushnell Sportview 4x scopes attached. I know there was a time when Bushnell made excellent optics, and I think the vintage Sportview's fall into that category, but I'm unable to find much info on them. Are they worth repairing, and if so, which ones? How do you tell if the Sportview is from the proper "vintage" timeframe or is part of the moderne plastique junque? Lots of old ads show rifle packages with a scope attached, and some can be discerned to be the Sportviews.

Thoughts? No haters please, just rational discussion.

the longest shot I ever made was with a 4x bushnell. it was 1981 and I shot a buck across a cut bean field at dark thirty. the shot was 488 long steps done with a 6mm rem 100gr. sierra btsp and 45.5 gr. of imr 4350 killed him dead in his tracks!

That's uncanny my longest was in 82ish open pasture shot with the 4x bushnell sport view and a Ruger M77 6mm Remington but mine was 100 grain Core Lokt at 398 steps. At 300 yards a four foot wide piece of plywood would fit within the skinny part of the cross hairs our deer from chest to butt were close to that so it was a poor mans range finder. I love my early 80's fixed 4x Bushnell scope and still have that same scope on a muzzle loader that I took a deer with in November. My other one is on a 22 mag. They have a fantastic field of view Ive killed a lot of running game with them.

I have had some 1970s Bushnell Sportviews---3-9X32mm models. They are glossy black in color with very fine lettering plus they should have a "Made in Japan" verbage somewhere. They are very good scopes but do not bring much money as far as value. If you should want to get one repaired--it probably would cost more than what they are valued for.

I'm still using older Bushnell scopes I purchased in the late 70's/early to mid 80's, and have had good luck with all of them. Some of my favorites are the old Bushnell "Quad Power" scopes--2.5-10X40 with an old school bullet drop compensator. These are dandy scopes, and one of them currently resides on my Marlin 308MX, and another on a Springfield Armory M1A. Seems I have one or two more, but what rifles they are on escapes my memory at the moment. Kind of sorry I didn't buy more of them.

I know everyone wants the latest and greatest, but I like to try to match vintage Rifles with same year or as close as possible Scope. I have 2 Bushnell 3200's and except for the no parallax adjustment they are nice. Bushnell has always been a working man's Scope. I have a 1968 H&R 317 with a 1968 Redfield 10x on it. It's chambered in .17/223 and the scope isn't the greatest but the Rifle looks nice to me and that's what counts right LOL.

Not all, actually. Some of my favorite scopes are the old Redfield "wide-view" TV view scopes. I have one on my 2nd .35 Remington 336 and love it. Hence my interest in these old Bushnells. Anybody have old literature scans on them?

Bushnell has some pretty nice scopes, now even, but I agree that the old glossy ones weren't bad for the money. I even have an old Tasco or two that still get the job done. Also have others that just go in the "scope drawer", okay for a plinkers. I wish I knew how to identify them myself, as many have very little identification marks or stamps.

Maybe we have a scope guru having around that will find this and pitch in.

Edit: this dad blamed "predictive text" is a pain in my a $#@!!

Scorpion8, I agree, I bought a new 3-9 Wideview new, so long ago, not sure when it was, but they were fairly new. It rode a 30-06 for about thirty yrs., then a 50 cal. muzzle loader for a few yrs., then my 7MM-08 XS7 for about four yrs., now its on a 835 Ulti-mag shooting 3 1/2 inch turkey loads, killed two gobblers with one shot last season, so I would call it good!! Still clear as the day I bought it!!! T Rex
