Cuz... why not?
The 2nd group... wish I had the first 2 shots back. Pulse bounce from a combined 600 yard stroll...
Patience IS a virtue!
A VERY nice coincidence is at 300 the drop, 20 inches, puts the intersection of the crosshairs at point of aim and the top of the bottom thick hair in the group!
Now I'm not saying the .35 Remington is a 300 yard round. But! In certain circumstances, like previously wounded game, a good rest and a range finder... I'd take the shot.
This load is a Leverevolution duplicate. Still has a decent amount of WHOMP at 300 too.
The LORD smiled on us today!

Nice shooting! I think more people should practice out to 300-400 yards. As you point out, if you know your duplex scope, mil-dots/radian cluttered scopes aren’t necessary for hunting.

Even out to 400 yards, if the bullet doesn’t have enough oomph to expand (basically a solid), a 200 grain .35 caliber bullet at 1000 fps will penetrate 30” of deer flesh. That’s going to leave a mark.

They have competitions with old black powder cartridges out to 1000. What limits the range of a cartridge out in the field is that of determining the range. Even with a rangefinder you will rarely get exactly 300 yards or so. The blunter slower bullets start dropping so much that being off by a little bit can cause a miss. Hitting at a known distance is one thing, at unknown another. With practice one does get better though.

Never tried a 336 past 200. For better velocity and expansion, I think I'd want an XLR or a good ol' 336A.
I get faster speeds from round noses, and more powder, because the FTX has a bearing surface not much different than a 220 Speer. Sucks up more space for the same weight.
Doesn't matter though. The superior ballistics of the FTX vs the round nose means any initial velocity advantage of the r.n. is quickly overcome. According to Hornady, the b.c. of the FTX is slightly superior to their 200 grain spire point.
To my eyes, a .35 Remington looks... odd loaded with anything other than a big fat round nose. Preferably a Core Lokt. But with this new knowledge, Boop will still most likely be carrying a mag full of Core Lokts. But I'll have a few FTXs in my pocket.
Just in case...

Yup--your assessment is right on. I own a SSP-91 in 308 Win. This is a 12 inch bull barreled single shot pistol made by Magnum Research. Mine has a 2X Burris pistol scope on it and I can very consistently hit a 200 yrd pig size steel target with it but even going out to 300yrds is a stretch with that setup. 300-400 yrds with a M1A or a Garand is very doable with the stock peep sights but it is a whole new ball game when you shoot 500-1000 yrds. Unless you have one of those new calibers that were designed for 1000-2000 yrds like 6.5 Creedmoor or 408 Cheytac or 338 Lapua Mag.

Very cool. In my Remington 760 35 I load Hornady 200 grain Spire points. I'm always assuming that they will fly faster and farther than the round nose in my 336 with the same powder charge but have never tested or documented any of it. Enjoyed that!

I'd switch to the FTXs. Better ( advertised) b.c. and far more likely to consistently expand. The spire points are better suited to the .358 and up calibers.
45 grains off LVR gets 2280 out of my 22 inch 760. When I had a 336 in .35, I got 2200 fps with the same load.
I still prefer round noses though. Tradition!!!

Thanks mud. Those are great points. However I would never take a shot at a whitetail with either of my 35 Remington loads in either either my Marlin or Rem rifles beyond 150 yds. I know they expand at that range for me.

I have used the .358 Hornady Interlock SP (spire point) in my Rem Mod 760 35 Rem and a Traditions G2 Outfitter 35 Rem single shot on deer with LVR powder (both rifles shoot that load at ~2,400 MV). It really flattens game and the bullet performs like it should! I like that bullet better than the FTX which does have a tendency to over expand or explode in my hunting experience. YMMV.
