What's a good subsonic round in 22LR? I've been using Remington Target 22 in my Rossi 62 pump, but that stuff is rather pricey. The leaves are off the trees and it's time to break out the 22 on the local squirrels.

Tthhhhhpppppppptttt!!!! on the Remington.

What are you looking for Willy? Quiet factor? Knock down? A combination of both?

Most of the subsonic ammo IS a bit pricey but IMO it is worth it. At present I have in the larder Aquila Super Colibri, CCI Quiet, CCI CB Shorts, CCI CB Longs, and whatever is left of the Remington Subsonic.

The Super Colibri and CB Shorts are the most quiet. More quieter than our Benjamin .177 air rifle. The CCI CB Longs and Quiets are still not as loud as the air rifle and the pill hits the target with some authority. The Remmy Subsonic is rather loud for my tastes.

The bullet weights respectively are the ASC at 20gr, both CCI CBs are 29gr, the Quiet is 40gr. Not sure about the Remmy, as it is buried right now.

All are plenty accurate.

My Rossi (long gone now) didn't like anything but Long and Long Rifle ammo.

My Rossi is one of the last built before Rossi stopped production when Taurus took over and it is marked 22LR. Shorts won't feed through it at all and Longs are "iffy".

I'm hunting in a woods lot behind the house and we've got neighbors in front and on both sides of us so I try to keep from bothering them overly much although they are kind of used to random shotgun shots coming from our direction (Mrs Willy and her 16 gauge). The Remington Targets aren't that bad noisewise, but so far they're about the only subsonic ammo I've been seeing locally. Just trying to get an idea of what all is out there and is any good.

I've got a brick of Russian made steel case subsonic 22 target ammo that was a Christmas present from a relative, but that stuff has had quite a few squib loads as well as some that are definitely hot so I've quit using it.

Mostly I'm looking for a good combination of quiet and knock down.

CCI Standard Velocity (AKA Subsonic) is deadly accurate, in my bolt and the model 60. The 39A does not tolerate anything less than Federal Subsonic.

I love the CCI Standard Velocity and the Wolf Match and Wolf Target stuff. The Wolf is made in Germany by Lapua using Vihtavuori powder and is really good stuff if a little pricey.

Hey guys,

I have done a lot of research on 22lr and the like for my 39a and Marlin 60. I only shoot Federal Lr HP copper 36gr 1236fps and CCI 36gr HP 1246fps. Both these rounds I match rim thickness and weight, thus no flyers. they are deadly to 75yrds and the tree monkeys never suspect a thing. They always come back out to see what happened to their little buddies.....pop, then an other comes to see where the other two went........pop dead too. Never had the need to shoot quite bullets....may be a bit over kill.....

The squirrel you shoot will never hear the shot. Run the CCIs but from my experience I like the noisy drop em like a rock Fed Bulk .22s

I've had a blast shooting cci quiets out the kitchen window today. Very quiet, plenty powerful and the only complaint wasn't from the neighbors, it was from my wife picking up shell casings from the kitchen sink! Gotta go get a few more boxes tomorrow. I'm battling my local Wal-Mart for charging $8@box when everyone else is $3 or less. No explanation, just 15 different lies. I'm waiting on a response from Wal-Mart Corporate. I figure the 50 or so email addresses I've found should net some kind of response.

CCI standard and CCI Green Box Match are my go to for serious accuracy in my Model 39A and my various bolt guns. Green Box is way better, more predictable, but more expensive. In a 22"+ barrel both are usually subsonic and pretty quiet - not suppressor quiet, but minimal crack. If you shoot at various ranges is is easily MOA in my 39 at 100 yards. That said, you do need to know the bullet drop. When sighted at 50 years indoors, I know is will be 4.5-5" low at 100 depending on the ammo and the rifle I am using. Using holdover, I can still have 1" groups at 100 on a calm day. I have a Bushnell Trophy 3-9X40 on my 39 and with the crosshairs on the bull at 100 it will hit just under midway between the center and the start of the thicker part of the duplex. There are various scopes that have markings to use.

CCI is the one brand that all my rifles and pistols like. Some do better with other brands, but all types of CCI are near the top. Stingers are target level accurate in a S&W 617 revolver I have (odd for a hyper velocity round)

If you can find them, I have found PMC Scoremaster in the blue and white box to be a very close equal and they are clean (unlike the PMC Zapper), but Scoremasters are out of production now, but will show up at gunshows occasionally. I have also used the Wolf Match that is made is Germany. Great stuff.

For squirrels I have always used standard velocity with head shots to leave something to eat.

My 2 favorties are the CCI Quiets (40gr @ 710fps) and the Aguila SniperSubSonics (60gr at 950fps). The CCI Quiets are normal .22lr dimensions, the Aguila SSS are 22 shorts with a very long and very waxy 60gr bullet.

All Colibris, CBs, and such are all very quiet, but also VERY low powered, so if you're hunting, they leave a lot to be desired.

The SSS's really thump!

On some of the boxes of Aguila Colibris I have it tells you not to use in a rifle, especially semis, as the charge may not have enough power to clear the barrel of a rifle. It is not a problem to knock the squib bullet out with a cleaning rod, but you risk scratching the barrel. Another risk is if you shoot another round with the bullet still obstructing the bore, especially if it is a full power load.

AWESOME! Been hunting since I was 8 years old (ALLOT of years ago) and I've always killed squirrel with a shotgun. Just hung the old Model 60 out the kitchen window and saw two squirrels sitting in a limb about 20 yards away. Well, one squirrel was sitting on a limb, one was sitting on the other squirrel with his own gun hanging out. I popped the girlfriend and he didn't know what the hell was going on. She just went limp. He jumped and knocked her to the ground. Clean head shot. In one side and did not exit. I've never considered myself a good enough shot to hunt squirrel with a .22, but these dang CCI Quiets are super accurate and it did help a little bit that the couple was into public displays of affection. Lol

I did a test a while back with "Standard" Velocity .22 LR ammo - - most all of it was "Sub-sonic"... Figure anything below 1,100 fps is "sub-sonic", and most of the ammo I tested that was "standard velocity" was running around 1,080 fps...

As long as the bullet isn't breaking that 1,100 fps mark, the sound barrier won't be broken, the round won't de-stabilize when it passes from "super-sonic" to "sub-sonic", and the report is reduced considerably. When shooting the standard velocity ammo, I don't even bother wearing ear plugs - - the sound of the firing pin dropping at the squeeze of the trigger is as loud as the report of the round discharging.

For ammo... Aguila standard velocity, Fiocchi standard velocity, CCI standard velocity, Federal 711B's, Pistol match ammo, etc. all shoot well from my bolt-action long gun - - accurate and quiet.
