I can get 358 W. Brass in Starline brass or Winchester? Now I have heard Starline make good brass. But is it the same quailty as Winchester or the same/better?

Ditto!

I've had nothing but very good brass from Starline.

I use, and prefer, Starline brass in 44 mag and 357 mag. Since they finally started producing 30-30 brass recently I either couldn't afford a 250 ct order, or is was unavailable due to the recent idiocy. in "bottom feeder" rounds, I don't really care (as long as I sort out and trash anything "Amerc"). My second choice for my favorites is Winchester brass.

In the past, I’ve always picked Winchester brass if available! As of the last several years, I’ve heard that their newer brass is of poor quality.....I don’t have a clue! Starline, has built a good reputation as a quality brass manufacturer! So there ya go......All of that and no real answer!

In the past 4 years I’ve bought 460 S&W and 45-70 brass in Starline, and have no complaints at all! memtb

Given the choice I'd pick Starline every time. All the Starline brass I've used in both pistol and rifle calibers has been very good. I've had good Winchester brass in the past, but recently manufactured that I've gotten has been cr@p. Two bags of fifty 25-20 I got recently had dented mouths, very inconsistent primer pockets (some so tight I was afraid they would go off when seating them, and some so loose I wasn't sure they would stay in), and rims that included some too thick and or too wide to fit the shell holder. I spent a lot of time fixing / preping them and still ended up with about 20% loss. If I wasn't desprate for them I'd have sent them back. I considered getting Starline 32-20s and necking them down, but as I have 32-20 guns I don't like having them be the wrong headstamp.

Doubt you'll have any problems with either.

My 7x57 prefers Win or W-W brass. It's got room for any extra 1.5-2 gr of powder more than Rem brass. Of course that means it's thinner, but it holds up just fine.

I've had problems with Fed brass in the same caliber and for the same rifle. I get case head separations after the second reload. Some say that Fed brass is softer.

If you're not going above moderate power loads, you won't have a problem with anything you use.

Realize that loads using different brass cases may shoot to a slightly different point of aim.

I have had good luck with both Hornady and Winchester brass for my 358 Win rifles. Don't use Starline brass for my 358s but have had good luck using it in 44 Mag/45-70/327 Fed Mag. Don't think you could go wrong with any of these brands if you can find them now.

Being a big fan of Winchester brass, I am disappointed by the reports I hear on Winchester brass. Not having used and Starline it's an unknown subject for me. It's probably been ten years or more since I bought any new brass, at one gun show I bought out every round of Winchester 7x57 and .358 Win. brass the guy had on his table. I later bought out every round of Winchester .280 Rem. nickel plated brass he had. FWIW, I know the guy and I've bought stuff from him before and he always gives me a decent price. The only problem I've ever had was from the .358 Win. brass. There were 6 .356 Win. cases in the pile and they were miss stamped .358 Win. Collector's stuff???????? Some of the brass had necks slightly squished but nothing I couldn't fix with a center punch and a run through the sizing die. That's something I ddo anyway with new brass along with a lot of other work. All get trimmer to the trim too length, flash holes reamed and primer pockets uniforemed. Other than trimming again after shot a few times all that other work in a one time deal.

Olin Matheson/Winchester sold off their brass rolling plant two decades ago. All Winchester brass is made under contract by someone else. There is an ugly rumor circulating on the Internet that some is made in China. I don't know if that's true or not, but I've had poor results with Winchester brass, so stopped buying it. I had to throw some Win .45 Colt brass in the recycle bucket, the heads and rims were so soft, they deformed in the shell holder while reloading. I buy PPU, REM, or Hornady for bottleneck rifle, and Starline for pistol brass. No new Winchester at this house, but if you can find it, old W-W brass from the 70's, 80's, and 90's is top quality.

Starline, since I have a choice.

I opened an old box on a shelf in the garage the other day, and I smiled when I discovered two bags of Starline brass I had forgotten about.

I have not used 358 brass. However, all other brass from Starline has been very good quality for the price. Their 45-100, 45-70, 40-65, 38-55, 357, 38 spcl, and 32-20 have all been good. I have been buying direct from Starline except a couple hundred nickel 32-20's I got from Midway a few years back.

Recently I have noticed that on a bunch of Winchester commercial 30-06 ammo I bought there was some kind of deterioration of the brass---like green oxidation spots on the brass. This is brand new ammo which was stored in an ammo box in a cool dry place. Could be a bad batch of brass with impurities in it. I fired some of it and the mouth on the cases split. I never had this happen to my Starline brass. Maybe Win quality going south ??

Starline is by far superior than any one else out there in the brass making business with the exception of Lapua and Norma. Winchester brass has been contracted out to the lowest bidders for nearly two decades. Who knows what quality standards these multiple mfg's have when WW is stamped on the brass.

With over 50 rifles and 50 handguns I load for, this is my routine. Lapua for rifle, if they don't make it, then Norma. If they don't make it, then Starline. If they don't make it, then Sig Sauer, Federal, and Hornady in that order. For handgun, it's Starline all the way!

Never had any issues with either and use quite a lot of both . I usually try to use Winchester brass in my Winchester guns but I am not fanatical about it and do use the * - in my 38-40 m92 and my Colt SA. Buy the best deal and you will be fine .
