Anyone have any luck shooting slugs in their full choke 12 ga.

For several decades, a fellow I used to hunt deer with used a Browning light 12ga with a fixed full choke for deer hunting. He shot whatever foster style slugs were cheapest, winchester and remington mostly. He killed a lot of deer with his browning and as far as I know he never had a problem with his shotgun. Myself I wouldn't shoot slugs in a full choke SG and, as stated, slugs are meant to be shot out of an open or no choke barrel.

Soft foster slugs are no issue, it's been done for many years. Remember for many decades the full choke was the choke of choice for many old time hunters, they also used their shotguns for deer with foster type slugs. My father-in-law used Winchester slugs in a full choked Model 12, never any problems.

Many assume the grooves on a foster are for spin, they are more to compress when firing through a tight choke. Like a .22, you will need to try a few brands to see what your gun likes best. I currently use a Browning 20GA BPS, Williams type fire-site on the rib, she shoots best groups a 50 yards with the Modified choke tube in, second is the full tube.

It's worth a try with different chokes. My Remington 870 12 gauge shoots Foster slugs most accurately with the modified choke tube, rather than a cylinder or Improved cylinder. Cloverleafs at 50 yards (big ones!) at 50 yards with either Remington Sluggers or Federal Tru-balls. This is a 21" smooth barrel rather than a rifled or rifled choke tube version.

shot slugs from modified and full choke barrels with no issues... but, I do not recommend it. I now have rifled slot barrels and use them exclusively for when I shoot slugs. Another option worth investigating is a rifled screw-in choke. If you have a screw-in choke barrel you can get a rifled screw-in choke. I considered this option but opted to get the rifled barrel instead.

I have only had luck shooting slugs in fixed choke guns and every fixed choke gun i have ever shot was either full or exttra full. My dads Remington 870 Winmaster slug gun was x ful choke no rifling he had it for like 40 years until he traded it a few years back on a Marlin .30-30 which the fool sold in a divorce along with My 870. Yes I have grouped 4" at 100 yards with that 870 . Rifled barrels didn't use to exist or I never saw one until about 10 years ago. Shot or slugs out my S&W 1000 12 ga with full choke isd better then any ic shotgun i have ever seen at 75-100 yards. about 4" groups again except i can just pull the trigger:marchmellow:
