Skinner Sights for Henry Big Boy?

I decided to purchase a Big Boy this week in .45 Colt rather than continually searching for a Marlin 1894 in the same caliber (passed on one 5 years ago for $500, pretty stupid decision now). I like the rifle so far and took it to the range this afternoon, got it on paper with the factory sights for a 50 yard zero. It was easy to see and hit clay birds on the dirt berm, not so well on paper and black bullseyes. Not a big fan of buckhorn sights. I wanted to hear if anyone had installed a Skinner rear aperture sight (receiver mount), and if they had removed the existing rear sight and put in a dovetail blank to fill the slot, or just left it on. I'm thinking the rifle would look better with the sight removed and slot filled. I have used Skinner sights on a couple Marlins before putting scopes on them, and do like them. Or if there are other iron sight options that you like, would love to hear about them.
Thanks
Ron

445, thanks for posting your pics. Is your rifle one of the older Henrys? My receiver is drilled and tapped for either scope bases or adding a iron sight. I looked on Skinner's site and they also offer a peep with base that you put in place of the factory rear sight.

I had installed a scope on my .45 colt Big Boy for my wife to use but discovered I had to order a new hammer from Henry in order to install a hammer extension for use with the scope. I modified an uncle Mikes hammer extension and installed it but it was slipping on the hammer so I removed the scope and extension , putting the rifle back into original condition, and bought her a Marlin Youth Model 336 30-30 to hunt with. I may put a skinner receiver sight on the henry later but I am using it with the factory buckhorn sight for now.

Ron, I have one of the first Big Boy rifle made in Brooklyn, NY (#891). This rifle is not drilled anywhere and to keep it that way, I removed the rear sight from the dove tail and installed a Skinner peep. This puts the sight on the barrel and a bit forward of the receiver. Does not seem to effect sight picture at all. I did not have to mess with the front sight. Firearm shoots great and doesn't let my shooting partners know that these older eyes are not what they used to be. Good luck with your purchase.

my experience with skinner on my big boy

i have a 2nd gen big boy in 44 mag/spec. i put a skinner sight on the receiver and took it to the 50 yard range. using 44 spec ammo, it shot 4" high. windage was perfect. the sight is shipped in the low position; so a higher front sight is required.

i didn't feel like doing all the front sight removal and replacement so i compensated by just re-positioning my sight picture. now i'm used to it.

We make a sight that fits the Drilled and Tapped holes found on the Big Boys made over the past few years. We call it the Skinner BIG BOY "EXPRESS" . About 50% of our customers report using a taller front sight. Many use the factory front sight.

These rifles are great and the newest version in Steel should be the same. I'm anxious to get my hands on one and shoot it.

Please check out our HENRY page at Marlin peep sights

For the H001 owners, take a look at our new H001 sight. Its designed to be low enough to "generally work with the factory front sight. Our sight will extend the sight radius of your rifle, looks sleek, trim, easy to adjust, and be solid as as a rock.
