Side Mount Sling Swivels?

I googled and couldn't really find it. I've got the sling swivels that mount to the underside of my 1895. And I tried putting a sling on it, but it just doesn't work for me - doesn't carry comfortably. I prefer the combat type slings we put on our M-16s that mount to the side of the rifle, so the flat side of the rifle rests against our back (crossways, so it doesn't slip off my shoulder).

So has anyone mounted their sling on the side of their rifle like the old M-1 carbines? Looking for products/pictures/idea.

Thanks.

rnArmy, I've seen examples where people have had the leather covers sewn for the lower portion of the stock that incorporated a side-mounted sling attachment. Can't seem to find a picture right now, but that might be a direction for you to go.

Look for one of the ones for the older M16A2 that were designed to adapt the undermount sling swivels to the side mount two point sling. Those work nicely on the lever action rifles. Something like this:Slings Only® M16 / AR15 2 Point Sling * 1-877-754-6476 *
I've got something like that now (but the front mount wraps around the barrel). And if I can't find something that I'm looking for, I'll probably go this route. I was just wondering if there was something out there that had a neater appearance; maybe a replacement for the metal band around the wood fore-arm piece that had a sling mount on the side vs. on the bottom.

Not sure if you are dead-set on a two-point setup, but I've considered replacing my safety with a sadlle ring and hooking on a sigle-point sling. Just and idea. FWIW I use the standar GI M16 sling on quick release sling mounts. Most of the time the sling is removed and in my pack, I only put it on if I need to sling the rifle to free up my hands. I don't sling it much; just prefer to carry it. Just another idea.

Been looking around and found this querie about side mounting a sling. The following:"http://www.marlinowners.com/forum/1894/115333-leather-butt-cuff-my-1894-a.html" will show how one was able to do it, by attaching it to a butt cuff.

I've been thinking about devising a single-point sling mount (Mil Style) at the front of the receiver between the lever and the fore-end. I think it would do the trick for easy field carry. It would keep the rifle in a ready position. Seems like it would balance well at that spot. :hmmmm:

McMillan offers a "flush cup" for a sling mount. They install 'em on the sides of their fiberglass rifle stocks. Am thinking one could be installed on the side of a Marlin buttstock, but I don't know that one could be adapted for the front sling mount.

Maybe just stick with the hose clamp for the front sling swivel and paint it flat back to be tacticool.

What ever happened to folks totting their gun. My old 336 is wore at the barrel and receiver from being in my hand. Folks been hunting that way for years, till the desert wars and the military adapted the way they carry now. :hmmmm:

European military bolt-action rifles (especially cavalry versions) have been side-slung for 100+ years.
If you google some images of rifles like the K98 Mauser, Swiss K-31, Steyr M95, Finnish Mosins, etc., you'll get plenty of ideas for a sling setup that is proven to work. You could probably even use some of the hardware.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Right now it's looking like this will be the best bang for the buck (pun intended): Slings Only® M16 / AR15 2 Point Sling * 1-877-754-6476 * But I'll be here in Afghanistan till the fall, so I'm still taking suggestions.

I carried an M-16 with a sling very similar to this one for a year in Iraq (with the ammo pouch on the end), and you hardly knew it was there. I became a believer (didn't take long, believe me) of the side-mounted slings. I never could keep an M-16 on my shoulder with the military issue sling.

Army, I am really interested in that sling. Will that front harness fit on a lever action?

P.S. And thanks for what you do for us.

Thanks Gladesman.

Looking at the picture I think it will fit. For $25.00 it's worth a shot; you just need to get the right sized swivel mount for the front. I'm months away from being home to try it out. How about being the guinea pig for the group and testing it out and posting pictures?

I'm wondering if the front adapter harness could be wrapped around the barrel forward of the swivel mount (instead of behind it as shown in the link below).
