Short .44 mag brass

I was under the impression only the big bore rifle brass from Leverevolution was shorter but I was cleaning some .44 mag LVR and it looked a little short so I measured and sure enough its about .030 shorter than my Lyman 49th trim to length. I wish someone could measure all the different calibers of LVR and post the short ones in a sticky so it would be easy to find. What do y'all think? We could ask members to measure their different cals and put together a database that way or it might even be available from Hornady. Fom

That's what happens when you want to hype a .44 mag put a pointy bullet in it and make the brass shorter so it will cycle instead of hanging up. The OAL of a LE .44 mag gummi tip in a standard case would make some hang up.

Far as I'm concerned even shortening a say Rem or WW case to use the LE bullets may be an explosion waiting to happen and very dangerous.

Hornady cases are short to start with and as such have less powder space giving higher velocities and higher pressures than the standard length cases.

Bottom line check the ballistics of the pointed bullets vs the standard bullets and ask yourself if you need it considering the max range of the mag pistol rifle you are shooting them out of. My guess is if you want a levergun that shoots out to 150 to 200 yds step up from the .357 and .44 mags to when of them hyper velocity 30-30s.

The pointed pistol bullet an idea we did not need, when you go to a rifle cal I can understand its need.

I got some of the 225gr flextips in 44 cal for my muzzleloader. I was using 100 gr. of BH209 at a velocity of about 1950 FPS. They shot excellent.(holes touching) BUT When I dug 2 of them out of the dirt they had basically not expanded at all. They more or less just lost their plastic tips. Not impressed at all with them.

I am not necessarily a fan of leverevolution terminal performance but I sure hate to throw away brass. Couldn't it be trimmed to 44 special? Forgive my ignorance but this is the only way I know to learn. Fom
Far as I know the only real difference between Magnum & Special cases is the length, so yea. You should be able to do that. I say "should" because I'm unsure if there's a wall thickness / interior volume difference. I don't think there is but it'd be worth looking into that point.

The magnum case is 0.125" longer than the special case, and you're running .030" under mag length on your LE brass already. All other things being equal, you should be just fine trimming another 0.095" off your cases. (.44 Special case length = 1.16")

Yep! And I would be more than happy to do that trimming for you. Course, I WOULD load and shoot it about 10-12 loadings to make sure I trimmed it right!!! ;D

For awhile, I couldn't get Spc brass and thought I would have to trim mag brass. Glad I didn't HAVE to!

Now we have a good use for LVR brass. Just send it to oscarflytier. ;D Fom
+2! Must be my lucky day! Son just called me. Seems he has a pallet of old nasty used WWs in the warehouse and wants to know if I want them. I will need a LOT of LVR brass for all that lead!

I am wondering if it would really be necessary to shorten the brass to 44 special lengths. I have some Hornady 45 colt brass that is a few hundredths short for whatever reason that I still use, but just for light loads only. Could you take the length of the short 44 mag brass, figure out the difference between what is acceptable 44 mag and 44 special and load accordingly?
