I couldn’t decide either so I bought both. Lol, but I’ll say this I actually use the trapper more than the sbl. I just like the shortness, less weight when hunting. It proves to be just as accurate as my sbl. The furthest shots have been at 100yrds. I really glad they made the trapper as a user gun so now I can retire my STP.

I bought the Trapper a month or so ago and really like it!
It's my 1st 45-70, but I still like the SBL and might get one within the next year.

The problem for me is there are other things on my 'wish list' too and the SBL may or may not follow me home - depends if I see one, or if something else consumes my budget (like the 1894SBL in .44magnum, which I haven't seen any of yet).

My LGS had the Trapper sitting there for several months, just tempting me.
I was sooooo tempted, but my name was in their book for the first 1894CSBL that came in, so I waited.
Three days after I ALMOST bought the Trapper, the '94 came in.
I bought that Trapper less than a month later!
In my case they did not have the 1895SBL.
They had one GBL, which had a slightly stiffer action. (I think I have some kind of stainless steel fetish! )
Then I saw their website listed an 1895SBL but I was out of fund$.
I'll see what they have next time I'm in the store.

I'm interested in the 1894SBL in .44magnum, but I don't think any of those have left the factory yet.
I STILL want the 1895SBL, but now I have one 45-70 that I really enjoy! :top:

So many guns, so little time (and money)!
Seems like the longer I stew over these decisions, the easier it is to 'pull the trigger' when I finally see one in the flesh!

I am in the same boat. I really like the trapper for both weight and the short barrel but I wonder how much I am going to lose out at 200 to 300 yards. I have no doubts that att 250 yards the SBL will do the job but I am really concerned that the Trapper with the 16.5" barrel will have way too much drop to compensate for.

Anyone who owns both? Help would be appreciated because I am retired and with all the other things I am involved in I need to choose just one rifle, one shotgun and one pistol to take with me.

Alto what is the round capacity on both? I think the Trapper is 5 but I am wondering if the SBL has room for an extra round.

I am new to the 45-70 and am going to carry a Trapper. I wondered about velocity loss. I have been told that the difference with factory loads could be as little as 150-200 fps between my barrel and a 22".

It's mostly for close range use (berry picking, etc) but think it will hunt fine out to 150 yds. I currently am using skinner ghost ring sights but have put on a lever scout rail and have a scout scope with quick detach mounts.

I will probably take it along on hunting trips. Likely, I'll be with someone using a flatter shooting rifle. I know this post is dated, but just thought I would pass on what I've been told, about velocity loss.
