I seen a Savage bolt in .308. I was told that it was a Axis; I did not check the box. It has a wooden stock. Priced around $475. Question: any thoughts? From what I have read, the trigger is not the best.

I don’t believe that’s the same rife as a Savage Axis. This review says imported from Turkey. That would not bother me. Only thing that might would be the three position saftey and the two stage trigger.
But it I comes with pillars and a recoil block, the walnut looks awesome, and it has a three lug bolt….so I’d say for the money it’s a nice rifle.
Only other issue I would have is the polymer magazine, but that’s pretty much standard these days.

Nice write up. Thanks!!

Mossberg Patriot is made in the good old US of A and can be purchased for that kind of $$. I've purchased 3 or 4 as gifts and all were solid rifles.

Thanks all! Yes, I would prefer USA. It is what was available at the LGS. I was looking for a Ruger. Yet, one was not available. I could probably buy online. But, I like to support LGS and handle firearm before buying, when possible. I will probably go back and do a dry fire. If the trigger is not too bad, I will probably buy me a early Christmas gift. 😊

So, you're saying that a $400 rifle accurate enough for 350yd shots might not be good enough for the average buyer?

Inquiring minds are curious. 🤔

Thanks

I have a Savage Axis in 6.5 CM. Paid about 300 for it a few years ago. For those that believe in 5 shot groups there is not a lever action rifle that would touch it out of the box. Shot a few deer with it, a couple at 200 yards. I did dress it up with a bottom line Boyd's stock. Still have it. Bought a Ruger Predator that was on sale for 400. Left hand. Had the Savage been LH I would not have bought the Ruger.

This fat doe was taken with the Savage at about 200 yards. It wanted to jump a fence so I shot it twice. The exit holes made a figure 8. It jumped the fence anyway. Nothing about the cartridge, they tend to do that it dropped after the jump.

I’ve been wanting something to put night vision on. I have over twenty rifles but I just don’t want to change anything up. I’m thinking about a Bergera. Either 708 or 308. Don’t want another caliber to load for. I don’t care what they say about the 6-5Creed.

I have one of these rifles chambered in .243 Winchester. They are made in Turkey by Turqua imported by Savage. Two versions, a wood stock and synthetic all with 20" barrels and a single three round magazine others are available though. I could write a long-winded summary of mine but to keep it simple I will say based on my sample of one they perform good for their price range. Bolt was a little stiff at first but mine feeds perfectly and has gotten smoother I have close to 200 rounds through it by now. I found the trigger serviceable and the adjustment on it is for sear engagement it did nothing for my pull weight by messing with it the actual Turqua branded rifles have a fully adjustable trigger the Stevens doesn't. The adjustment screw is glued but with a small amount of heat can be loosened. I left mine where it was. Mine is somewhat picky about bullet choices and seems to like weights of less than 100 grains it will shoot Bergers but not anything heavy it likes 95 grain VMax. With a 20" barrel it's hard to hit book velocities most of them are based on a 26" barrel. Now they are making a long action 334 available in 30-06 and 270 Winchester. I have only seen one video of the 30-06 so far and it looked good don't think I will buy one though. One negative I will share the mounting screws on the supplied rail were either over torqued or soft three of the four were stripped and the base came loose under recoil. I wasted a bunch of handloads during load testing I even changed scopes that's when I saw the movement of the rail. I was lucky the receiver threads were good but the screws were totally stripped. Quick e-mail to Savage and the sent me four more to replace the ones I had in my spare parts. Other than that I like the little rifle it does have a tight neck in the chamber Fiocchi brass necks are too thick for my rifle and Hornady are right at the limit. Headspace is close also my brass doesn't grow much after a couple of firings.
