Rossi Ranch Hand

Just bought a lightly used Rossi Ranch Hand in .357. My favorite caliber is 44 Magnum, but I didn't want to endure the recoil of one of these in .44 Mag. I think the .357 will make a very nice, fun little gun. I'm considering doing the SBR paperwork on it and getting a carbine butt stock.

It has the same sights as the EMF Rossi's had, bead front and semi buckhorn rear. I was kind of hoping for patridge sights like my Rossi 92 trappers have. It is the smoothest operating stock Rossi I've ever handled, I'm planning to do an action job (Steve Young's DVD) and it may turn out slick as glass. It also has the Taurus safety lock in the hammer. My other Rossi's don't have this.

I think this would make a dandy little piece for hunting from a blind, where you could sandbag it like a Contender.

Well, to each his own. I appreciate the nostalgia associated with Wanted Dead or Alive, but just don't see this as a practical firearm. Why go thru the problem of getting "permission" to put a regular stock on it, when you can get a Rossi/EMF carbine? But I may be missing something and this turn out to be a great gun to use from a blind.

I think they are neat, not sure yet if I would want one but I can definately see a lot of good uses and purposes for one, many people especially women are intimidated by the power of a handgun powerfull enough to be usefull for self defense in such a small package, this piece could be the perfect home defense weapon, easy to shoot around a corner or doorway, easy to keep feeding ammo into and easier to hang onto than a small handgun the extra weight would also reduce felt recoil, also seem like it would be easy to use inside of a vehicle, may be good for hog hunting with dogs easy to run through the woods with, steve mcqeen and chuck conners may have been on to something

I'm wondering if a conventional Rossi model 92 rifle butt stock would fit on there without any modifications to either the new stock or metal. Could it be that easy ?? Of course that is after one completes a BATFE Form 1 to "Manufacture" an SBR.

The Ranch Hand as is does absolutely nothing for me. But as an SBR I think it has huge potential.

Regards,
Rob

I just picked one of these up in 45lc. This gun holds a very special place for those of us in Canada.

1) in Canada, this is classified as a non-restricted rifle. Even though, according to the letter of the law, it is too short!
2) we are not allowed to carry handguns (for the most part) in the bush in Canada. We can carry this beauty.
3) no carry means no handgun hunting. I can use the ranch hand for hunting.
4) if I want to throw a full stock on it I can. No SBR ruling, no legal issues. I'm just making it a slightly longer rifle.

Soon as my brass and bullets show up, I'm gonna be having some fun!

All the talk about an SBR has me thinking. How cool would it be to get a Rio Grande in 45-70 and cut the barrel back to 12". Put on some fiber optic sights and that would make the ultimate brush gun.

I have several SBR and SBS weapons and simply can't bring myself to NFA a ranch hand. I. Am not really sure why... Maybe it's the large loop or the fact 12" is only 4" shorter than 16 and it seems a 16" carbine is plenty short. Maybe a 12" 357 SBR threaded for a can is cool but it's not killing me to have one.

These posts reminds me of some youtube videos. One in particular where a guy shot a terribly ferocious racoon with it at a hundred yards. Go check it out. That being said, I have been eyeing a henry with an octagon barrel and modified loop for quite some time. I have to get past the 700 dollar price, but the Rossi is definitely my second choice for one of these. It just looks like a good camping/hiking backpacker. Just another toy to add to my want list. It is a shame that Marlin didn't get in on this boat, I would have had to sell my kidney to get one if they offered it in a 480 Ruger, 475 linebaugh or 454 Casull. Incidentally I have heard J.B. Custom has it listed to make the 454 and 480 in a mares laig, but thats been on a back burner for two years now.
