Hi all, I recently purchased a new 1894 Trapper in 44 mag. My LGS had ordered it ahead of this past hunting season, but it did not show up until afterward. Since it's been sitting on the shelf for a few months, I ended up snagging it for under $1k.

It's my first lever gun and is now a companion to my S&W 629 Classic 6 & 1/2".

I am looking forward to learning more about Marlins and lever guns!

Thank you for all the welcomes! I reside in the great state of Iowa. I have been to the range with it a couple of times. The first time, sighting it in. When I got it out to 100 yards, I was getting 2-3 inch groups, which I am very pleased with. This was with some cheap PPU ammo, so once I work up a load it likes, I'm hoping to tighten that up. We'll see.

That said, the light gun kicks pretty hard from the bench. Even with the "rubber" recoil pad. I put rubber in quotes because it's a harder material with sharper edges than my recoil sensitive shoulder likes. I'll throw a Limbsaver pad on it next time and see if it helps. I will also be buying a cheek sleeve thingy for the stock to get my eyes up on the sights. Right now, when I shoulder the gun with my eyes closed then open them, I'm looking at the bolt. I need to get my cheek up so my eyes are level with the peep. I know from experience that a gun that doesn't fit will usually have more felt recoil than one that does.

I might also add some weight to the forearm or add a brake in front. Much more to come. Any insights on reducing felt recoil are more than welcome.

I have a Mossberg 500 for home defense. It hurt to pull the trigger and the LOP was longer than I liked.
Put a MagPul stock on it. Doesn't hurt anymore. It comes with a LOP adj from 12 1/2 to 14, a adj cheek riser and a rubber butt pad.
It would solve two of your problems.

Thanks for the suggestion. I really like the aesthetics of the dark wood laminate stock contrasted with the stainless steel. I wouldn't be happy with the looks of a polymer stock. No offense meant for those who like the tactical lever look. I think those are cool too. There are plenty of ways to take care of LOP and cheek adjustments without buying a different stock. I've done it before.

I did take it to the range today along with my 629 to chrono some loads and threw on a Limbsaver slip-on pad I had laying around. It went from to short to too long a LOP, but man the felt recoil is way less. So a decent pad with a 14" to 14&1/4" LOP should solve the recoil part.
