What twist rate is the remington manufactured 336W's barrel?.....it appears to be a 12 groove barrel but the twist rate seems to be tighter than the 1:12 that the new marlin site says their new 6 groove barrels are.

reason I ask is I'm putting a over-barrel suppressor my 336 (and the half length mag to allow it to work) and I'm looking at the possibilty of using a 215gr lead cast HP boolit for bush hunting......a 1:12 barrel will be marginal for a bullet of that length and velocity but a 1:10 twist would be perfect.....seeing as most of my shots are sub 75 meters a suppressor seems like a good idea....plus it will allow me to hunt a number of places that while fully legal to hunt have in the past resulted in police being called when townies with the holiday homes hear gunshots in the same postcode.

I just rechecked it with a marked cleaning rod and its definitely 1:10......which is excellent as its a lot more tolerant to subsonic loads with long and thus heavy cast bullets so i'm now (in theory) limited by 'how heavy a mold can i get will cycle?' rather than 'what weight can i stabilize?'......I see a 225gr CBE mold in my future

My Speer reloading manual has rifling twist rates and the Marlins are listed as having 1/10 twist and Winchesters and Savage as having 1/12 twist rates. I have read elsewhere that Marlins were made with a 1/10 twist.

Yes you need to make sure the OAL will cycle in you gun and that the base of he bullet doesn't extend down into the case where the powder can melt the base of the lead bullet.
