Does anyone have experience with these? How do you like them? I realize they're not Buffalo Bore or Garrett loads, but they're claimed to be hotter than Remington's standard loading. Thinking they might be a good in between round.

They will be perfectly safe in any modern M1895. They are not high pressure cartridges, they are loaded to full SAAMI pressure. “Normal” .45-70 factory loads are loaded to well under SAAMI pressures.

The NRA once tested a factory load and found it developed 20,000 cup compared to the SAAMI MAP of 28,000 cup. That’s how Remington was able to raise the velocity by nearly 300 fps - they had 8000 cup to play with.

Ditto what Rollingblock said. According to Buffalo Bore, their magnum loads are between 39k and 43k psi and are still considered safe in the 1895, albeit that's getting close to the threshold. So these are more than safe enough, but still offer a decent bump up in power over the anemic trapdoor loads.

Top end Marlin loads with the 405 bullets are not for those who are recoil sensative

Since most factory velocities are taken in 24” barrels, you shouldn‘t expect much of a velocity increase, certainly no more than 50 fps - if that.

With the volume of a .458" bore you get pretty efficient burn of the powder in a somewhat short barrel, so there won't be a huge increase like with a small or medium bore magnum. But there still should be some increase. The 50fps estimate is probably pretty accurate, it may even be a little less than that depending on the barrel.

A good place to check velocity gain/loss in the 45-70 is on Buffalo Bore's site. Because the 45-70 is on the slower end of rifle velocity, their site shows that some loads are literally in the single digits (yes, less than 10 FPS) per inch of barrel length difference.

At one time I owned both a Guide Gun and an XLR. I found that the Guide Gun lost an average of 96 fps compared to the XLR with my 405 handloads.
