Remember the old Spiegel catalog company? Savage 99 Spiegel
Remember the old Spiegel catalog company? Savage collectors historically shied away from rifles they saw with sling studs/loops and extra holes. That changed a bit in the early 2000s when a Savage collector came across an old Spiegel catalog ad that showed a special variation of a 99 that Spiegel had Savage make for them. The catalog showed a roll-engraved receiver, sling loops and noted a scope D&T. The D&T is unique with two holes in the rear by the cocking indicator (one in front and one behind) and two underneath the rear sight. Since that ad was discovered, about 50 or so of these “Savage Spiegels” have been logged. Most seem to be in a serial range between 360-395kish (1936-40), although catalogs have now been discovered from a couple years before and after.
I finally found one, a nice 300 Savage from 1940.
