Recoil pads for an 1895 in .45-70?

Gday yall,

I recently purchased an 1895 in .45-70, and wanted to purchase a new recoil pad for it (for obvious reasons haha)

I like limbsaver but the only pad i found was for a 444/450 and some other remington firearms. I figured the 444/450 would work on any 1895. But the pad, even though the size matches up and is correct, the screw holes are in the completely wrong spots.

I put it on my Remington 870 and cut my losses. (Its not like thats really a loss haha)

So has this happened to anyone else? And is there any other recoil pads yall have found that work well?

Thank you in advance!

Great ! I hear what tbilly is saying, not as soft, but I prefer the Pachmayr. I am yet to have to replace one , where as the Limbsavers have melted [?] I guess its a personal preference thing :dontknow:

Not sure but I do know that rubber auto suspension bushings made with rubber from China crack/begin to deteriorate in a matter of a few weeks, whereas OEM (Volvo) rubber bushings last 20+ yrs.

it has to do with the *quality* of the rubber.. German/European rubber products (automotive) will far outlast made in china rubber products by a loooooooong shot.

Could be they are using cheap grade of rubber?

Ive mounted Limbsavers on 2 45/70 and an odd six.
Filled the old holes with wood glue and chopsticks. (nice thing about having an Asian wife, always have lots of broken chop sticks).
Redrilled the correct holes.
Ill never use a pachmayr again

ProblemoNumeroUno,

I feel your pain. Mine has a beautify steel crescent butt plate and it weights 9.6 lbs! I have fired exactly one 535gr cast bullet. Had to, you know. If you have not already considered reloading, you may want to. Many have turned their lever 45-70 into a mild recoil machine with 45 Colt to 454 Casull equivalent loads.

I happily shoot silhouette matches where warm up and matches run around 50 rounds over 1 hour and never flinch.

For hunting loads where you carry all day and shoot once, a heavy fast bullets is hard to beat. However, for every day practice and friendly competition you can load this great cartridge with subsonic to 1,800 fps 280-300 gr cast loads and really enjoy the rifle.

I agree with others above. It is OK to drill a different hole pattern for a pad you like then sand/grind to fit the stock.

I installed Limbsaver 10102 on my GBL and SBL and the fit was almost perfect with the same screw holes.

I should add the fit was not absolutely perfect. there is about 1/32 inch of stock showing in one spot. If you want an absolutely perfect fit then you will have to go to a grind to fit. But my rifles are hunting rifles and that doesn't bother me in the least.

Thanks for your reply. I actually spoke with them and they told me while they didn’t have one specific to the Marlin 1895 45-70 they said that others have used the 10102 Classic and the 10806 AirTech. They told me to print out the templates from their web sight and compare them to my stock. I set my printer to 100% and printed them out, but none of them, including the 10102 and 10806 fit. My printer might be the problem, but I’m not sure at this point. My rifle is a brand new 45-70 GBL so I guess I’ll just order the 10806 and hope for the best.
