The wife bought me a 336y for Fathers day. I want to add a recoil pad to it to increase the LOP a little bit.
Is there a prefit one that fits it?

Since I've never seen a 336Y in my neck of the woods, I can't say one way or the other. You can always opt for a Kick-EEZ grind to fit, great recoil pad, easy to grind without gumming up and they hold up well. Then you'll have a perfect fit.

I used a Limbsaver. It wasn't a perfect fit. I think the Y model is a little bit smaller anyway. If you were to fit a pad yourself, I suggest a Pachmayr. It doesn't have the super hard plastic base to grind. I have a 1 inch Pachmayr on my 444 and I'm very happy with it.

When I bought my 336Y, back in 2003, it was not my first choice, but the deal was so good, $265 NIB from Bass Pro, that I took it home. I cut a one inch slice of Walnut off a shelf, and screwed it to the butt. Shaped it, and then put the factory recoil pad on that. LOP is perfect now. Always meant to either stain it, or do something better, but in the 13 years I have been shooting it, just never got around to it. :)

I'll say it,..just buy a full length regular stock to replace the short youth style stock on your 336. That's what I did with my 2004 version. It works great, looks nice, and shouldn't be that expensive with the laminate wood they're using right now. One screw and you're done. It's not a difficult thing to do, and it will look a whole lot better than a recoil pad.......

Just my thoughts on this matter............

If you are average height and arm length give it a try with the shorty stock. I like a shorter LOP and chopped an inch off my 336.

If you don't like it a slip on will be easiest.

I'd rather see you replace the butt Stock with a Stand LOP stock, rather than add a recoil pad that isn't needed to lessen recoil............

Then you would be saving the youth Stock to keep the rifle in its original form if you chose to sell the rifle................

At some point, that Youth model won't be made again.

personally i hate recoil pads! if the are factory equipped so be it, but to add one it ruins it for me. i have passed guns up just because someone put on a pad.

I have two sad stories about JM Spikehorns, but no one wants to hear grown men cry over a gun.

I do have two bolt guns with shorter than standard butt stocks. One is a custom stocked commercial FN from the fifties. It is about 1/2-3/4" shorter than normal with a steel Neidner butt plate. Even in .30-06 it is a pleasure to shoot. The drop and pitch are perfect for me. The other is an early sixties Browning Safari .308 that was cut and padded a full inch short. Because it was short, it was nicely priced. I bought it intending to use the action on a custom build. Then I shot it. This is the most accurate rifle that I own. As for the stock, I mounted the scope a little forward from normal, and it works just fine, especially in winter clothing. My daughters also like it. Both these stocks surprised me. I'm not a great big fellow, 5'10" but I do need a 35" dress shirt.

No no offense to anyone, but I can't do a Remlin. The next Spikehorns I see in decent condition and price will be mine, or I could just chop one of my 336s.

Best,

I added a the pad to mine for a few reasons. One being that my youngest daughter shoots it sometimes.
