I know there are a bunch of posts about the 45-70 and what powder to use. Since powder is still hard to find…what are people using these days? I‘d like to use 405gr.

What do people use for this bullet?

Try the Speer web site for their load data, Speer dot com

Also try hodgdonreloading dot com

Are you using jacketed bullets or hard cast lead bullets?

H4198 is also my choice.

I’m planning on using 405g hard cast. The problem I’m seeing today is finding powder. I have some for smaller calibers but the stuff I see used in 45-70 on other forums I can’t find. There are relatively popular powders being produced all the time and wondered what was being used by the powders we can get today.

IMR 4198 and RL 7 are what I have used with success. Have plenty of IMR 3031 which I see people using but haven’t used in the 45-70 yet because I’ve gotten good results with others. I have the Leverevolution powder too for my 30-30 loads and planned on trying that if I ever load the gummy tipped Hornady rounds.

My favorite is Varget, but I've tried at least a dozen powders in the 45/70. 4198 is useful, as is 3031, but both of those are on the fast side, and the difference in recoil is noticeable, at least to me. IMR or H-4895 works fine, and work when I'm out of Varget. If you want a full snort load I use about 50 grains with a 405, but that's not something I can enjoy for long! I think 55 grains is the maximum, but there are plenty of sources for data.

If you like muzzle flash, H-335 will light up the range pretty good!

Great pic! Good to know Varget works well, I have a few pounds. Where did you find the data? I’ll have to check my Lyman book.

I’ve had great success with RL 7......except finding more! 🤬 I have a bunch of IMR 4198, one of the better powders for the 45-70, and will be developing a load once the weather gets hot! memtb

Ok I use AR2207 in my 45/70 with 400gn Speer projectiles and your equivalent to that in Yank powder is H4198 or IMR 4198. Re7 is also close to these 2 powders as well as Varget but I've found that AR2207 in my 45/70 gives me groups like this at 50 yards.
The reason I sighted in my 45/70 at 50 yards is because we chase pigs on quad bikes or walking through the scrub where a long shot could be 50 yards or a bit more,

Those 4 shots inside the bigger circle are the 400gn Speers.

H 4198 is my “ROCK STAR” powder for the 45-70. I shoot a 400 grain soft lead hollow point from GT Bullet Co. at max volume. I call it my “ state land “ load. Hit a deer with that and it’s not going to far. Leaves a devastating hell of a punch to what it hits, usually dead right there. No running off and being picked off by another hunter. I know some will howl and get angry for making such a “monster” but my gun, my 2nd Amendment. Not fun to shoot, but no tracking. Unique for plinking rounds.

Vihtavuori N130 and N530 (N120 with 300 gr) are what I have used.

Varget is great but it will leave a few kernels of unburnt powder unless it is pushed to the max. But definitely not a deal breaker. It isn't fouling the barrel, just unburnt kernels. Vihtavuori is probably the best powder there is for almost everything. Just plain clean and accurate
