Powder question

Nick's estate executor contacted me yesterday said he found a tub of gunpowder and would I take it.
So I went by and picked it up.
Lots of old friends and some that I'm not sure I can use thus this post.
Nick loaded for a lot of different rifles such as .308, 30-06, 303, 300 BLK, 223, 45-70. 44 magnum, 357/38 among them.
I'm mostly handgun and my 300 BLK - someday maybe I'll get another 30-30 or .308 but I don't have any bottleneck cartridges besides my 300 BLK.
I suspect several of these powders can be used in magnum pistols such as IMR 4227 - others I'm not clear on and I have been unable to find a list whereby a powder is listed with what it's suitable for.
So that's where you guys come in. Here's what I got that I don't have a clue about.
Picked up a couple of lbs each of powders I haven't seen in ages - Universal Clays, Titegroup (yay!) and Trailboss (which I have no use for).
Then several lbs each of old standbys such as Unique, 2400,Lil Gun and H110.
Side note - as much as I dislike H110 I'm now 5lbs richer. Guess I better learn to like it ;)

So here are the powders I know zip about - I'm just looking for an indication on what calibers they are considered useful.
IMR 3031
IMR 4350
IMR 4895
Varget (I suspect this is one that might work in a 44 Mag or 300 BLK)
Reloader 7

IMR 3031 is great for the 45-70
IMR 4350 works well in 30-06 and similar, really well
IMR 4895 was originally for the 30-06, and is a versatile rifle powder

Varget works GREAT in the 308 Winchester, not half bad in many other rifle cartridges. I've burned a lot of it.

Reloader 7 works real well in the 45-70

They're all good rifle powders. I've used them all.

Regards, Guy

I concur with with your use assessment totally. However, I've not used the Reloader 7 but I know a lot of reloaders like it a lot.

Its great to see someones supplies go on after death,
Thats kinda my fear, When Im gone who and where will it go? I don't really care since I won't be here,
But it would be great like this to have it go on..
Yeah, I'm trying to figure out who to leave what to.
I have a nephew that reloads and appreciates guns as well as two SILs that I think might appreciate a nice pistol or two plus maybe a 22 rifle.
But as you say won't matter after I die.

lol - well I do have a buttload of 30 cal bullets and now I have 2# of powder.
I guess I need to go drop $500+ on a 30-30 now ;)
Honestly I've been looking for a couple of years now and I never see them locally anymore.
Even if I did, I dunno I'd be willing to pay the Marlin JM tax.
Truth be told I'd much rather have something in .308 or even better 35 Whelan.

If my brother could have just 2 powders it would have been 2400 and 3031 for his 22 Hornet and 30-06.
When he got into shotgun reloading he increased his selection a little.

I have used most of those powders but have burned more Varget than anything, mostly because I bought a bunch of it years ago from a guy that was deploying overseas and couldn't store it stateside. I recently bought an 8lb jug of Reloder 7 for loading 458 Socom and finally found a load that will cycle the action on my short 8.5" upper. Sorry to hear about your friend but am happy you can put that stuff to use. May it continue to put a smile on your face and remind you of your friendship.

I recently told my wife that when I kick the bucket to contact one of my friends who is an 07 FFL to let him help sell what she doesn't want. I know he will be fair with her and can help with the class 3 items which can be tricky to dispose of. He is also a commercial ammo manufacturer so would probably put most of the components to use himself. Sadly neither of my kids have any interest and other than my brother who might like a rifle or two, I have nobody else to leave stuff to.

RL-7 will also work in the 444 Marlin and 375 Win if you know anyone who loads for those rifles.

I'll likely post them locally asking for some bullets I'm running low on as trade material.
I could use a resupply on Hornady XTPs for 44 and 357.
Maybe someone has VV N110 or other suitable powder for trade.

All of them are great. 3031 is good for 30/30, 45/70 etc... even 223. I like 4350 in 6mm's and similar, or the long action non magnum cases like 30/06, 25/06 etc... Varget I'm not a fan of and think it's overhyped but it does do well in 308esque cases, or the "micro action" sized cases like 6mm BR. RL7 is another great straightwall powder.

Hmmm if you say 3031 is good for 223 how about 300 BLK since basically same case?

You got a real treasure find. I would kill for the 30-31. I only have one pound left. The 4350 is good for 243, 7x57, 7-08, 270 and 30-06 and a whole bunch more rounds. The Reloader 7 is a good straight wall powder and what I used for 45-70 loads. 4895 is a great all around powder that if I were limited to just one rifle powder it would be my choice. Too bad Austin is 180 miles away or I might try to talk you out of most of it.

Might make a good motorcycle trip to a halfway point when it cools but you have to promise not to bump me off ;)
PM if interested as I'm looking for some things to swap for.

I'm a loner too. Nobody else I know reloads. My sons just have no interest. Where will it all go? My guess is the executor will look up comps on Ebay and just sell it for whatever price and to whomever comes in the door. Pennies on the dollar wouldn't surprise me. Maybe I'll have a grandson who is interested before that day comes...

IMR 4350 is a great powder. I use it for 270 Win, 358 Norma Magnum, and 348 Win. Once I get some fire formed cases, I will test it out in the 300 WSM. It also works with short action rounds such as the 243 Win and 6.5 CM.

If you are looking for barn burners there are newer powders out there but IMR 4350 is not a one trick pony.

I’ve gotten some very accurate loads with Varget in my 30/30, 170gr pills.

IMR 4350, you scored big time with that one, in my area, that powder is tough to find, superb in 270, 30/06 and many others that have a similar case.

RL-7, any straight wall case.

IMR 3031, has a lot of uses in 30/30 sized cases, 45/70 and many more.

IMR 4895, worked well in my 358win, 30/06.

Powder is so much more expensive than it was back in the day. Depending on how it was stored the powder could be fine or not so good. If any of the containers are open you want to give a quick smell test. They should smell like acetone and not a sort of sour vinegar smell. Still miss the days of buying BLC(2) with the purple and white label for $12 a pound and Federal 210M primers were $12.95/thousand.
