Since Nosler is discontinuing the great 300 gr PT, what would you fellas consider the perfect 300 gr bullet for the 45-70?
Nosler is pretty good about taking feedback through their forum. Let them know how you feel about the PT going away and what the perfect bullet would be.

I don't have a dog in the fight (yet), but what about the Barnes 300gr TSX? They're about the same price (>$1/bullet) or even a little less and I have never heard a bad thing about any Barnes bullet.
Ill give ya one. The price, spendy little bastids.
I agree they're spendy, but they're no more than the Partitions we're discussing, though. Right?

The best bang for the buck in 300 grain loads is the Speer Unicore. The toughest 300 grain bullet made for the 45-70 is the 300 grains Barnes XFN which my wife calls the cement bullet. ;D ;D..Tougher than the Nosler but because it is basically the length of a 350 grain bullet, the velocity suffers.

There is not another man that has pushed the 300 Nosler more than I on Levergun forums.I have fought tooth and nail for it way back in the Marlin Talk days...To say the least,I am quite disappointed in "Nosler" but with the way things are I semi understand....

Pretty disappointing. I'd think a company as large and diverse as Nosler would at least keep it in the line-up and make one big run each year. Well, guess I'm glad to have a bunch of 350 gr Hornadys and 405gr Remingtons, as well as the 300gr cast bullets on my bench. If I'm pressed for time a box of 300gr Winchesters always does the job on deer and I'm sure would be fine for black bear if I didn't have time to reload one of the others. I'd always thought that Nosler could've done better with something in the 350-385 gr range to go along with the 300gr "lightweight", but it looks like that won't happen now.

As long as Marlin keeps building the guns, we'll keep finding something to feed 'em.

If my memory serves me correctly, I was told a couple of years ago while speaking to one of the Nosler factory people on the phone that they were looking at going to a heavier partition bullet in the 44 mag. and the 45-70. Maybe they are now doing it. Has anyone else heard anything along this line?

It isn't a 300gr but my favorite do everything bullet for my 45-70 1895GS is the 350gr Swift A-Frame.

I personally don't have an issue with Nosler discontinuing their 300gr PT bullets, of the thousands of 45-70 rounds I have shot I have never used it... ;)

Reading this, I had to look at my 45/70 bullet stock. Well, I have about 10 boxes of the Nosler 300 gr., 4 boxes of the very fine North Fork 350 gr., a couple of boxes of Swift's great bullets, etc., so with the way I usually don't just pound 'em into a dirt bank, these will probally "last me out" ;D.

Surely Nosler will come out with a new replacement bullet if indeed they discontinue the 300 grainer.

I'll be watching them very closely for an announcement.

I'm still trying to get an "Official Response" from Nosler. I'm sure its going to be along the lines of too expensive a bullet to make for the low volume of sales.

I got a hunch that there is going to be an new bullet to replace the PT.

JD338,

Possibly something in the way of a non-lead core bullet, maybe?

But then, who can out-guess the bullet companies :-X.
