I recently acquired an 1895 GS. It has had very little use and is in great shape. I’m excited to get to the range and have it zeroed in. My long-term goal is to put a red dot on it. I’ve not been a big game hunter only Upland birds. So for now, I will just be punching paper and some steel. Another option is to put a scout scope on it.
The two letter stamp on the barrel is barely legible. To the best of my ability it appears to be a JM. The serial number is 93xxxxxx.
if anyone can sort out the vintage on this for me, I would really appreciate it.

That's a nice one! The 1895GS is probably my favorite model Marlin and I have owned a few over the years. FWIW Midwest Industries makes a really nice ghost ring setup for Aimpoint and similar footprint optics that allows you to co-witness through the lower third of the sight. I put a Holosun 503 on one of mine and absolutely love it.

I have two XLR rifles one is stamped the same way and it's disappointing, but the rifle is a good shooter.
Congratulations, looking forward to seeing target work.

Since I picked this rifle up, I’ve been to the range twice now. The first time was a rather brutal experience, using factory fullbore ammunition. Since then I have worked up a subsonic load that is much more comfortable. It is a 405 grain lead bullet over 14 grains of Blue Dot. Velocity is somewhere around 1000 ft./s.
The iron sight are not very easy to work with in my 72 year-old eyes. I’m thinking a scout scope would be a good addition. Still, with the new load, it’s a fun gun to shoot.
