That's the holy grail of 45-70's. Non-microgroove rifled barrel. It should shoot like a sniper rifle, if the barrel is free of lead deposits. Great find! I have a couple of these myself...they shoot cloverleafs at 50yds

 

I had one, a ‘72, was a great rifle even if a little barrel heavy. I’m still kicking myself for letting it go.

 

I doubt it has had a box of shells through it. Very little wear on the lever and little lead scratches on the loading gate to indicate much use. This is the second 45-70 I have owned, the first was a model 86 Winchester and it shot very well to. Gave that one to my son to be sure it stayed in the family.

Those are the nicest looking factory rifles that Marlin ever made.

 

I have a Navy Arms 45-70 built on an Enfield receiver. I picked it up at a pawn shop in 2004 for $205. Absolutely love it. One of most favorite rifles.

I have a 1972 first year B00 ser. no. and love the rifle. I found it used in 1973 on a dealer's gun rack in Virginia and it is my favorite deer gun. These early Marlins had Douglas barrels and are exceptionally accurate. I'll never let it go--ever. It is identical to yours. Very good catch.

 

Letting my ‘72 1895 go was incredibly stupid, don’t know WTH I was thinking.

 

We’ve all let go of firearms we wish we hadn’t. I rationalize it by telling myself that at least I had the experience of ownership, even if only for a while.
