This is what $251.84 of Boyds "XX Walnut" looks like.

I guess I had unrealistic expectations as this was very disappointing to me. I reached out to Boyds and was told that the wood I got was
what Boyds grade as XX Walnut and that no exchange would be considered. They did allow that I could send it back to them for a fee of >$30.
I'm not sure that I won't use the wood that was on the gun as it may actually be nicer than "Boyds XX Walnut."

If that's XX Walnut...then I'm NEVER buying from Boyd's.

They are now definitely on my "non-preferred" list and I'll let everyone, that might be looking for wood, know it

Sorry for your experience.

Agree that I do not consider that as XX fancy wood. I'll post on this thread a pic of a 336 stock I'm working on that was just a 40 dollar bare piece so you can see the grain on that for comparison. The pic I intend to post is just the bare wood with 1 heavy coat of grain sealer on it. I just installed and rough shaped the grip cap on it.

PS---Wondering if the trend of paying more for less is what is happening here. Maybe like all other things what you got is the new standard for XX fancy

Actually that is exactly what I had hoped for - really expected. But the response I received was short and, IMO, rather terse. Your wrong, it looks fine. Send it back and we'll charge you $30.22 plus return shipping fees for your mistake on ordering from Boyds.
So i'm out 50 bucks or I can lower my goals for the wood on a rifle I had hoped to make "special" ..... or I can find something else to use the wood on.

Am I unreasonable for expecting something that resembles the example photo shown on the order webpage....?

It appears Boyd’s is a company on the slide to the scrap pile. Higher prices, lower quality and a customer is wrong policy ( mandatory restock fee). I picked up a stock from them and it will likely be my last. We need another company to step in and make quality stocks at affordable prices.

I have a stock for a tang safety M77 that I tore apart 7 years ago and bought a stock from Boyds that was grade II and looks much better than that one. Working over time this week I'll see if I can get pics of it. It is UN-finished. But the advice given earlier about Treebone is solid advice. They have good wood.

XX or AA walnut is generally agree to be at least 50% figure on one side of the stock at least, of which that butt stock has very slight sparse tiger stripe at less than 10%, economy grade. Bait and switch, would not be dealing with them. Send them this link address as part of your quest for customer satisfaction. They will under stand, every time someone googles Body XX stock they will see this blatant, unmitigated rip off as representative of their company morals, they may then choose to honor the deal they made with you.

I miss the Bishop and Fajen inventory sales they use to have every year. They always had a lot of unusual stocks that they got stuck with. I bought several for Win rifles and one for a 39m. These were inletted and 90% finished, never got a bummer. Also bought some wood from Columbia Woodworking and was very satisfied. Herters also had a line of stocks that had a good rep. With all the synthetics on the market stock business is rough and will end up high end operations as far as wood. Laminates may stick around since there is little chance of arguements over wood grades.

1Merlin---when I get home I'll post a pic of Std grade 336 blank so you have a comparison. You will see the grain because it has not been stained---just sealed.

You are absolutely NOT wrong, and I think you should stick to your guns - and you might even mention that this is all over Marlin Owners site and there are already lots of folks saying that Boyds is now off the list. For what you paid for that wood, it should be exquisite!!! Reminds me of the time when I was at a Red Lobster many years ago - the menu showed this scrumptious seafood meal pictured - I ordered it. when I got my food it was pitiful. I asked to get them menu back, and asked to speak with the manager. I showed him the picture of the meal in the menu and then asked him to look at my plate. "Do they even look remotely similar to each other?", I asked. He said no, but that's what you got. I got up, walked out the door without paying for anything, communicated what happened to anyone who would listen (and here 30 years later I am doing it again), and never stepped foot inside another Red Lobster.

Stick to your guns and demand nothing less than what the advertised picture told you that you were going to get. I hope it works out for you.

A good point.... I am not sure who actually "decided" that my request was invalid or not to be considered... So, I have written another email requesting consideration for replacement of the stock with wood closer to what is pictured on Boyd's order/examples page. I again attached photos (the same as posted here) to the email to allow a review of the shipped product.

I am unhappy.... but perhaps I just caught "whoever" at a bad time and the response I received was not typical of their normal customer service.

I will post the response I receive from my 2nd request when I hear back from Boyds. I really hope what happened to me is not a normal response........

Okay guys--you be the judge- This is a pic of my 40 dollar walnut 336 butt stock unfinished with just 1 coat of sealer on it.
