So my son and I got up to howling winds and light mist and rain in NW Georgia this morning for our second hunt of the season. Cam had missed a doe last Saturday on opening day due to "Buck Fever" - He plainly missed the deer. Well today at around 8:45 am, I hear a gunshot and a "whoo hooo" from the direction of his stand. He texted me (isn't it funny how we communicate in the woods today" and said "I got a buck Dad!!!!!!!" Being about a 1/4 mile away, I started humping it over to him and when I got there, he was still in the stand and the deer was on the ground!!!.. He said he saw the bullet impact the near side hide as it rippled a little (he was 30 yds out and keeps both of his eyes open when on low power). The 120 lb, 3-point buck's front legs folded up at the shot and his rear end was high in the air and he sat there for about 2 seconds on his front legs, then rolled over to the right. That was it for him... Not a step, not a run, just - DRT, Lights Out, Pole-Axed, Sack of Potatoes, ..... you get the idea. ;D ;D ;D
He was shooting his 2004 Marlin 336CC Camo Stock 30/30 with a 20" Micro Groove barrel and using Federal Fusion 150 grain ammo. I can't say enough good things about this ammo!!! He was in a stand about 30 yards out so the shot was at a down angle. He hit just above the left shoulder joint and the quarter size exit was just under the right shoulder joint. Funny thing is for the deer to go down like that I expected to see blood everywhere. Very little at the entrance or exit and none at the mouth either??? I told him from the angle of the shot that he must have hit the heart as it couldn't be pumping at all since no blood. We clearly had expansion and pass through with the fusion bullet. Upon field dressing him, we found out why he collapsed but no blood. It was ALL in the Upper chest cavity above the diaphram. Not a drop of blood was in the abdominal cavity but when I cut the diapharam, about 2 quarts of blood and PULVERIZED-JELLIED lung material ran out.... He clipped the left lung (1"), cut the top 2/3's of the Aorta (it was gone), and utterly destroyed the right lung (I guess after it expanded). Instant "0" blood pressure and the heart pumped for a few seconds into the chest cavity. SO I guess the Fusion 150 Grain held together at 30 yds with violent expansion...... He asked me after seeing that "Dad, why would I ever want a bigger gun?" From the mouth of babes!!!!! The look on his face was priceless!!!!
