So my son and I got up to howling winds and light mist and rain in NW Georgia this morning for our second hunt of the season. Cam had missed a doe last Saturday on opening day due to "Buck Fever" - He plainly missed the deer. Well today at around 8:45 am, I hear a gunshot and a "whoo hooo" from the direction of his stand. He texted me (isn't it funny how we communicate in the woods today" and said "I got a buck Dad!!!!!!!" Being about a 1/4 mile away, I started humping it over to him and when I got there, he was still in the stand and the deer was on the ground!!!.. He said he saw the bullet impact the near side hide as it rippled a little (he was 30 yds out and keeps both of his eyes open when on low power). The 120 lb, 3-point buck's front legs folded up at the shot and his rear end was high in the air and he sat there for about 2 seconds on his front legs, then rolled over to the right. That was it for him... Not a step, not a run, just - DRT, Lights Out, Pole-Axed, Sack of Potatoes, ..... you get the idea. ;D ;D ;D

He was shooting his 2004 Marlin 336CC Camo Stock 30/30 with a 20" Micro Groove barrel and using Federal Fusion 150 grain ammo. I can't say enough good things about this ammo!!! He was in a stand about 30 yards out so the shot was at a down angle. He hit just above the left shoulder joint and the quarter size exit was just under the right shoulder joint. Funny thing is for the deer to go down like that I expected to see blood everywhere. Very little at the entrance or exit and none at the mouth either??? I told him from the angle of the shot that he must have hit the heart as it couldn't be pumping at all since no blood. We clearly had expansion and pass through with the fusion bullet. Upon field dressing him, we found out why he collapsed but no blood. It was ALL in the Upper chest cavity above the diaphram. Not a drop of blood was in the abdominal cavity but when I cut the diapharam, about 2 quarts of blood and PULVERIZED-JELLIED lung material ran out.... He clipped the left lung (1"), cut the top 2/3's of the Aorta (it was gone), and utterly destroyed the right lung (I guess after it expanded). Instant "0" blood pressure and the heart pumped for a few seconds into the chest cavity. SO I guess the Fusion 150 Grain held together at 30 yds with violent expansion...... He asked me after seeing that "Dad, why would I ever want a bigger gun?" From the mouth of babes!!!!! The look on his face was priceless!!!!

Congrats to you and your son rkcdude. I've been a huge fan of the 150gr Fusion 30-30 ammo too. I've been using them ever since they became available which IIRC was around 2006. From my 2002 336A they will consistently put 3 rounds in an inch at 100yds, with some groups under that by a smidge ;D I've taken deer over the past years from as close as 30yd and out to 135yd with this combo, mine however run a short distance, roughly 50yd. I've noticed the very same thing that you did in that there is not much blood at the point of impact. However once the deer have moved roughly 5-10 yds it becomes a whole different story.

Last year I hit a doe solidly in the pump house at about 50yd. At the shot she jumped ran across to the other side of the logging road stopped and looked at me for a couple of seconds before bounding off. At first I thought I had missed her then I was thinking to myself that there is no way I could have missed ??? After she took off I went to where she was standing when I shot her only to find no spoor on the ground indicating a hit. I then walked across the road where she was standing to look at me and found a huge pool of blood on the ground. From there it was a easy trail to follow to where I found her which was about 50yd away from where I shot her from.

Year after year this has become typical performance for me with this ammo. You would think that it wouldn't perform any differently than other ammo. But for some reason it does and I sure as heck can't figure out why it does. I do know that it sure ain't like the Hornady LE ammo, which sprayed blood all over the vegitation behind a doe I shot a year or so prior.

BTW I know this ammo is about $1-$2 more expensive than more tradititional ammo. But since it shoots so well and does well on the deer I don't really mind paying the extra dollar or two.

Your a Good Dad!!!
It is something he will never forget!.
I remember my first deer like it was yesterday. Last day of the Season -33° yep I said -33° C close enough to -33°F
It was a Mule Deer for me.
The best hunting day in my life! I can still taste the sandwitch that mom made.
My big brother took me out hunting in a 62 GMC truck on that cold Late Nov day, I needed to fill that tag!!!.
It's stuff a young man will never forget or turn his back on.

He just read what you guys posted in reply and said "thats cool". Thx for all the comments. We actually sighted him in with 160 grain lever evolutions and the fusion 150 grains. They both were within 1/2 inch t 100 yards of each other and the ballistic charts show them practically mirror images. He used the hornady last weekend on the missed doe. I changed to the fusions because our ranges were under 100 yds and I thought being bonded the fusions might not over expand or come apart at short range. I guess I was thinking the lever evolutions might be a little more fragile. Anybody have any input? Might try the hornady next time but hard to argue with bang flop!

Why mess with success? If it ain't broke don't fix it ;) Your reason for switching is one of the same reasons that I made the switch from the Hornady LE too. The other being that I wanted a tougher bullet than the Hornady LE in case I crossed paths with a nice black bear that would need coaxing in the back of my truck ;D I figure the Fusion bullet is a better all around choice for that type of thing. Now that I'm here in GA I can't wait to see what the pigs will think of them too ;D

Re: My 14 year old gets his FIRST DEER today-Marlin 30/30 and Federal Fusion 15

Congratulations to your son. A memory that will last a lifetime. Got my first deer when I was 13 with a 243. Asked the same question about why anything bigger was needed. Hunted with that same gun for 29 years, took many a deer, many never took a single step after the trigger pull.

Today was opening day. For the first time the 243 stayed home. 45/70 came along. Result: not a single deer seen or heard. So why a bigger caliber? 45/70 puts a grin on my face every time I shoot it. I like to grin.

So my answer to why bigger. No good reason, just for grins.

How did the le ammo do? We used it last week. Not why he missed but we like it on paper so far.

Nice buck Cam!! Hard to go wrong with a .30-30 and hard to argue with it's history of putting venison on people's tables. Hang on to that rifle. It sure served you well and hope it's one of many a memorable hunt for you!!

Yearling fallow buck at 60m and he dropped as if hit by lightning, it was the first time we have used the factory LE ammo, I have taken 2 other fallow deer out to 120m with reloads using the FTX projectiles and they both dropped on the spot.
Accuracy with either my reloads or the factory loads is exceptional, reloads with AR2208 (Varget) are well under 1" @ 100y for 3 shots and the LE ammo is around 1" at the same distance.
I was at a get together with some varmint shooting mates about a month ago, they had a target set up at 300m and I had a go with the 30/30 and the LE ammo, group went 4" and about 16" low.

Here is a pic of my son with his first deer

thx for the pics and comments 220 and cajun. i think we might try the LE next time. i use them in my 35 rem and 1895G 45/70. i used my 1894 44mag today as we were in some thick brush. i am using winchester white box 240 JSP in it. i will report back in on the LE. or i may keep him with the fusions....... right before he shot i was watching "clash of the titans" between two huge squirrels!
