Has anyone used Murphy's Oil Soap to clean a rifle stock? I am getting ready to clean up a W-word 94 that is in pretty good shape except for being nasty.

Thanks!

Wow! Thanks for the heads up; I was looking at using the Murphy's Oil Soap because my wife has some under the kitchen sink, but I was holding off for some feedback. Think I will try something different - maybe some of the wood cleaning wipes that were mentioned in another thread.

If it's just dirty form grease and hand oil, you might try a soor satin polyurethane and your old stock looks me elbow grease, mineral spirits, and a piece of old T shirt.
often this will simple clean some grime.\I just posted a lament regarding conservation vs restoration, and you didn't mention if yours was a nice pre-64 or a post 64 shooter.

The next step would be Formby's or Minwax antique furniture refinisher and 0000 steel wool...mop-rub-remove with paper towl-repeat.
This stuff dissolves most finishes without the harsh effects of most strippers.
several in process n ow, and the method is about fails safe
Once it's cleaned to your satisfaction, 3 coats of rub on oil, or satin polyurethane, or tung oil and your ready for reassembly.
Tung oil gets too glossy for my taste pretty quickly, but it's a good finish.
Your old stock will still look old, but fit well, show the natural beauty of the wood grain, and retain the charactor and storied dents, befitting it's age and "experience".
DON'T OVER DO IT!

The rifle is a pre-64 carbine that I traded to an old friend about 15 years ago and he traded it back a couple of weeks ago. It has been used hard and neglected (by my standards) and I am just cleaning it up for a shooter to use with cast bullets around our place for armadillos, etc. Front sight was knocked off and replaced with a shorty front ramp sight and the rear sight is a full buckhorn with double elevator and white diamond - haven't looked to see who made it. Not refinishing, just breathing a little life back into it.

DO NOT :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( .... :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(....... :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
I repeat with more encouragement than I have ever given anyone

DO NOT USE MURPHY'S OIL SOAP ON YOUR GUN or simple green or similar soaps and degreasers. What is there will be removed completely.

I made this mistake on a vintage Winchester and will forever regret my ignorance and stupidity.

If however you are trying to remove finish for restoration purposes then there are several posts regarding that on these forums

If your really, really sure that you must do something you'll be well informed after contact with

Deet-based bug repellant will also peel the hide offa yer finish...

There is no worse feeling than wondering...."Why is my stock all goopy now?"
then wiping the goop off, and discovering it was your Mar-shield...urgh!
