That's the first thing that came to my mind. As someone who'd likely been in the Marines over 20, maybe even 25yrs, did he not think that he'd run into old acquaintances? Faking NINE combat tours!

I mean Holy Crap Dude 🤬

Actually you can buy real medals online. And some you can have inscribed. Your service record won't note the commendation but you can get real medals on the interwebnetz. Despicable.

I knew that you'd have a very serious reaction and I'm sorry that I'm the person who told you.

I've had at least 3 Marines as my guests on my gift hunts and I'm close still today to all of them, up to 15yrs later. A Marine who'd lost a leg above, was my very first special guest and that man may end up being my Tn Governor if I live long enough.

You may know another Marine guest I've sponsored as he now speaks in many Marine events. That guy, an Osprey pilot, lost both legs and won a Gold Medal in archery in the Invictus games.

I have a deep love for all service members and I'm lucky to have very special Marine Buddies.

I don't get it.
The guy was a senior NCO in the Marines. I spent time training with Marines and I have the utmost respect for them. I don't think I could have gotten through Marine Boot Camp.
Why the blazes would he feel he would have to pad his service accomplishments? I am proud of my limited service time in the Air Force Reserves. Anyone who spent time in any military service, should be proud of themselves.

I have 14 awards issued to me during my service. Only 7 were metals and of the 7 only 4 came directly (issued) from the military. The remaining three rated a metal but I had to purchase it. 7 of the remaining rewards were ribbons only issued to ships company with no metal.

In Yokosuka Japan out on Honcho street there were a couple venders that sold the ribbons and metals. Couple times I purchased some ribbons that had become stained or just plain dirty from constant wearing. Never occurred to me to buy one I had not been decorated with. Now when I retired in 1988 after 26 years service, there was no internet and computers operated a DOS system. Think I just gave my age away... :D

I've never understood why anyone would thump their chest with something that is fake

Same here. I have 2 individual medals and 2 Unit Citations. One Coast Guard Medal awarded to COTP/MOS LA/LB for handling a record number of 11th District merchant traffic back in the early 80's, and along with that came a Unit Distinguished Service Medal. They actually gave us medals and ribbons. Pretty cool.

I had two medals pinned on me in Vietnam, both times by my battalion commander, a colonel.
The rest were standard issue for anyone who served in that timeframe.
A total of seven. I served 2 years and 10 months, was honorably discharged as an E-5.

I am not a hero, but I am fortunate to have served with some.
I’m simply a survivor.

Ok - I’m taking exception to your post……. After the last few years I have developed a zero toleration misinformation, and I’m calling it out.

You, sir, ARE indeed a hero. From one who never served, all who did serve are heroes. Medals and ribbons don’t make heroes. Honorably serving your country makes you a hero……. You’re just gonna have to accept it. Sorry 😉

Unfortunately, another Walz type fake.

He will retire at thirty or when ever his enlistment is up. Then get retirement pay for Sgt-Mag. How sad too throw his honor all away for ego.

I have to laugh and shrug off a lot of the wanna-be's out there. They never put in the work, never wanted to be part of the team, but want to use the glory to gain fame or credit. Notice when you run into a fake vet in a bar it's always "I was a SEAL" or "I was 82nd Airborne". How come you never meet up a guy who says "Yea, I was in the 857th Food Service Battalion....I cooked my way thru Desert Storm making SOS for the troops". Now HIM I would believe.

I've known a LOT of veterans of various services during my lifetime, back to WWII, including family members, friends from church and high school. Some were leaders, some were followers, some were heroes, some were just trying to survive and get back home to loved ones or to the family farm. I've also lost quite a few from WWII through Korea and VietNam. Every one of those, whether personal friends, family or acquaintances, were heroes to me. Some of my (age) buddies were killed in Vietnam, others after they came back from VietNam, hooked on drugs or whatever, ...crazy and sad...I have utmost respect and high regard for ALL of them regardless of branch, medals, stripes, ribbons or whatever. I had a friend who was in the U S Coast Guard who told me some quite scary stories that most never hear about. I've had friends and family in every branch of service over the decades. Me? I joined the US Marine Corps when I was 17 before graduating HS. I grew up hunting, hiking, shooting, playing football, baling hay, etc. I was gung-ho, in great shape and raring to go where a lot of my buddies had gone. I was eventually not allowed to go due to family hardship circumstances. I regretted that for a long time but realized, God does have a plan. I don't profess to be a true Marine but I'll always be one at heart. I have utmost respect for all who have served...always! It breaks my heart and then angers me at times when I see how this nation has turned towards all these ideologies (Communism/Socialism/New Age) that SO MANY of our citizens/service members have LOST THEIR LIVES TO PROTECT AGAINST!!! Why, oh why can't Americans at large, and in general, SEE THIS? I always ask but have no answer except that it is just another deception of Satan to try and destroy this nation from inside... We must always fight against this, refuse to be disarmed by any administration, and pray to Almighty God on these matters!
May God bless America and May God's will be done! Kindest Regards to all!

In my career I was awarded a good number of awards, many 2, 3 & 4 times. However, I'll admit that I was very disappointed twice, once for a nice award that I was "awarded" and never received and another time when I was put in for the Distinguished Flighing Cross but had it downgraded. I think all military members are quite proud of any award they earned.

However, it's still ridiculous to me that service members would lie about what they "Earned". It really chaffes my butt to be honest 🤬

Sorry you missed out on the DFC. But at least they acknowledged that you did something that demonstrated "heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight." My father got the DFC and AM. WWII fighter pilot.

Unfortunately some guys who served have been embellishing their service for many years! And unless you know them well and know their service it rarely gets revealed as boasting and making up military history. I doubt most carry a copy of their DD214 and if they did they sure aren't going to show it if questioned.
I'm always puzzled why anyone who served can't just be proud of whatever they did without trying to make more of it for undeserved glory or admiration? I served from 1969-75 and never saw any service in Vietnam. I have no problem telling people what I actually did without embellishing it.

I agree. I had a buddy a couple years older than me who was drafted (US Army) in 68. However, he was stationed his entire hitch in Korea and never went to VietNam. One time a buddy of his had shot a deer. He laid down in the snow and they spread deer blood all over and around him lying on his back, like he was dead, (I saw the picture later) and sent it to his mama as a 'joke'. His mama almost had a heart attack! I always thought that was a cruel joke and never was sure why they thought it was 'funny'....

... the sons of the rich on service deferments who chased skirt on Harvard & Yale campuses while brave soldier got killed and mangled in various theaters of war over the years no doubt consider themselves fortunate
Al Gore was a son of the rich and privileged that said he proudly served in Vietnam. Here he is demonstrating his proficiency in firearm safety.

Unfortunately, another Walz type fake.

I really don't know why, or I guess cannot grasp reasoning behind why some people do this? The only thing I can think of is they have the mindset of child are acting out of pure jealousy and trying to get attention just like a 3 or 4 year old child does. And most of them have probably done things like this throughout their whole lives and probably never got caught at it. So to them it is no big deal. They probably have accomplished nothing their whole life other than the the lies they have told.

... Trump is not in favor of feeding Americas best and bravest into overseas meat grinder conflicts that accomplish absolutely nothing (Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan) except make industrialists rich supplying the war machine ... this fact alone is justification for voting GOP this coming election ... a hunk of pot metal is a poor trade off for an arm, a leg or a life

As an old Marine myself, I am appalled that he got off so easy. Seems to me more reduction in rank would have been in order.

I am baffled by the folks that feel the need to embellish their military service. I have great respect for anyone that raises their hand and takes the oath, regardless of what their job ends up being. I've run in to several "combat" vets that downgraded people that were not also combat vets as not being "real Marines (etc.). My comment has always been, "How long would you last if you didn't get supplied, didn't paid, or didn't get fed?" EVERYONE in the military is necessary.

As far as awards, if it's not on your DD-214, DO NOT CLAIM IT! It doesn't get any simpler than that.

... another generation of American industrialists are getting rich supplying the latest battlefronts in the Ukraine & the middle east ... thank Goodness the USA & Canada aren't DIRECTLY INVOLVED (deploying on the ground troops) in these conflicts YET ... Trump will put an end to all this nonsense that if allowed to continue will result in WW3 and the end of mankind

I realize that I'm prejudiced, but I don't believe that those receiving military retirement pay should have to pay tax on it.

And as for this: "How long would you last if you didn't get supplied, didn't paid, or didn't get fed?" EVERYONE in the military is necessary.

I have long asked, who is more important, the G.I. on the front line, or the civilian back home loading his ammo? And that is NOT to belittle anyone, i respect ANYONE that served, regardless of specialty. They answered the call to duty.

I agree, and in Alabama, military retirement is not taxed

... Americans will be fighting the last battle in a ideological-political war today ... the fate of America & the world hangs in the balance ... we've never been so close to WW3 as we are right now ... Donald Trump needs to win the election today to pull America back from the precipice of doom & destruction ... no medals will ensue from winning this ideological-political war ... JUST SURVIVAL

My father, who insisted almost his entire life, that he was "only a cook". I gotten skeptical about that the older I got especially the handful of times I've seen him shoot. I only seen him handle a weapon maybe a half dozen times in 40 years butwhen he did he would shoot the balls off a fly.
It wasn't until his last month that he finally opened up to me about his time served, it turned out he was a sniper with the 82nd airborne and gave me a folder that he had all his medals fixed to it which i gave to my son. I'll get a picture of them because I don't know what the majority of them are and the are people here that probably know what they mean.
Yeash,I started to tear up thinking about this again as he passed from stomach cancer and veterans day is tomorrow, thank you all that has served our country.

I used to get in trouble at inspections for not wearing all my ribbons or that they were short of the added devices. One or two I didn’t even know I was awarded them. They were National Guard medals. I’m not disrespecting my reserve and guard service but we would get medals for going to sit at an armory during a major snow storm. It seemed silly compared to my forefathers that ran the gauntlet of the Pacific campaign or getting blown up in VN.

It was easier in the Marine reserves. I had no ribbons. I may or may not have a Good Conduct Medal but it didn’t reach me before I left. Funny that the Marines give an award for staying out of the brig.

Lol, I too wouldn’t even have the thought of being a PX commando. We had a nitwit in SOI that bought himself a pair of jumpwings. He wasn’t dumb enough to wear them at least.
