Just this afternoon I picked up a Model 36 manufactured in 1946. It is in remarkable shape with one exception. The butt plate is "larger" that the butt stock. The plate sticks up above the top of the stock and below the heel. It is a significant misfit on top and bottom but not so severe on the sides of the stock. Obviously the butt plate is not what came on it. Question is where can I locate a replacement?

Actually I've considered getting a metal crescent butt plate as a replacement. Anyone ever fit one to a stock?

Thanks,
Joel

I believe all Model 36s came with a rubber/plastic buttplate. In that case, you can use a flat file and sandpaper to reduce the size of the plate to sit flush with your stock. Check out this thread which shows some pictures of how to do it:

My replacement buttplate was probably 1/4" oversize. The pictures in the above thread were taken after I'd already reduced its size considerably with a file. Pretty much everyreplacement buttplate will be oversize as they are universal and intended to be final shaped to fit the stock.

Be very careful not to overstress your buttplate and remove the excess material gently since given its age, it's probably quite brittle.

The butt plate is plastic/rubber not metal. It has Marlin written in an oval with checkering surrounding the oval and below the bottom screw. The area around the top screw is not checkered. There is no white spacer between the butt plate and the stock. I'm not convinced that it is the original part. I may try the file to fit solution, but I really like the idea of a crescent shaped metal butt plate.

If you were to tape the stock a few layers and chuck a belt sander in a vise you could go after it quickly and w/ control.
I need to pull mine out and kill something w/ it as it is one of the best shooters I have.

I have a first model 1936 that I pickec up recently and it is a black plastic plate. It has several lines running horizontally through the middle and the two screw holes. The fit is as good as I could imagine possible.

Edit:
Remember if you fit it yourself, that the plate is not ground on the bottom at a 90 degree angle. It has to taper with the coutour of the buttstock. I ruined one that way once.
