Model 336 Forearm Removal

I just purchased a 336 30/30 yesterday, vintage 1979. My first Marlin and my first lever, well except for the Red Rider. The stock and forearm finish is in pretty bad shape so I would like to redo them but how do I get the forearm off?

I removed the forearm band screw and the front sling attachment so the forearm now slides back and forth but doesn't come off. The forearm does not slide off the barrel/mag tube because of the Front Band around the barrel and the mag tube. I removed the Front Band screw but the band seems firmly in place.

Before I mess something up any ideas are appreciated!

Also any suggestions on finish are also welcomed. At this point I'm considering boiled linseed oil or tung oil, don't care much for a varnish type finish.

Thanks

You should have to remove the front sight to get the front band off. It should basically slide off and the mag tube will come with it. Once the mag tube is out the forearm will come out. There are some pictures in the reference section somewhere. You might want to do a search.

I didn't mention it but I already had the front sight off. I had looked in the reference area but not where I should have.

I built up my courage and used the forearm as a battering ram to loosen the front band then it came off. Yes I know this wasn't a nice thing to do. :-\ The band was 'glued' on with 31 years of crud!

One more question. When the band came off there was a 3/8" diameter disk that came out. Maybe 1/32" thick. It was curved as if it might have been a spacer between the barrel and the mag tube. It's at the falling apart stage. Any idea what this is and if I should try to replace it?

Thanks for your help!

Can you post a pic of the disk? I've never seen anything like that.

Attached first is a photo of the little disk which as I said before is falling apart. Next is where it came from, the bottom hole of the rear band which had no screw thru it which accounts for the little nipple.

Also attached are photos of the 336 with the refinished stock.

There is one problem, I can not get the front band screw screwed in. It slides thru easily but the screw threads will not catch. When off the rifle it screws in easily.

Your 'disk' is probably wood filler or chewing gum someone put in to quiet a loose forearm.

I don't remember which rifle , but one of the band screws bolt (screw ) had the threads just under the head and did not screw into the opposite side . Tightened in the head (entry) side. The band hole in the wood was a little off center and I had to open the bottom of the circle just some with a pin knife . Screw slid right in after that . Maybe that's normal for the screw s Don't know as that's the only one I've ever removed .

I have removed a couple a dozen Marlin fore ends and NEVER have I removed a front sight. Why do you do that, does the front sight need to be cleaned or something? Just curious.

Barrel band get crud under them between band and barrel. The way that I have found to break the band loose is to place the rifle on the workbench in an upright position (as you would hold it to shoot) with a wooden block under the band. The hardwood block is in contact with the band and supporting the muzzle end of the gun. Then tap the topside of the band (top of the barrel) with a rubber hammer, some times takes a few firm taps. So far that's knocked them loose every time.

On some Marlins, the front sight is on a ramp screwed into the barrel on the muzzle side of the band. The band is not coming off without removing the front sight first.

I don't see how that can be done without bending the band. The middle of the band is tapered in and will not go up on the barrel to clear the sight without bending out of shape. I haven't done it in a while, so I'll have another look, maybe I'll see something different. It's no big deal to take off the sight anyway, just make sure you use the right screwdriver. I'm not doubting you, I've been proven wrong enough to know better. More power to you if you can do it.
