Model 03030?

I was just at a pawn shop looking at a Marlin 30-30 and instead of 336 it had "model 03030" stamped on the barrel. Hmmm I've never heard of that. The serial number starts with 120... which I think makes it a 1988 based on the PDF in the reference section but I'm not sure. It has a slimmer forearm than new 336's I've handled and it has a forearm cap, not a barrel band. Gold trigger and no cap on the pistol grip like a 336W. Bore looked nice and it was in pretty good shape all around.

Can anybody tell me about this? Would this be as good a shooter for $299 as a new 336W for $354?

Sorry if this has been covered, I searched for 03030 and found nothing.

Thanks,
Chris

It's at Boise Gun in Garden City and the auction just closed a moment ago, $242+. I looked at that "c" long and hard and it sure looks like the same "c" that is in cal, like it's not quite a closed circle.

Whatever it is, it is a Marlin and should be a decent shooter.

You did very well Sir . In the past I have seen a Mod# that read 3000 . Never found any info , that I understood . A printing mistake was all the suggestions I was given. Marlin never replied to my E-Mail . Then about a year later another 3000 showed up. But not the same gun . Looked like the 1st one though . " Strange things things happen"

Well...... it shoots!

With my 20-40 vision and standing off hand it was easily minute of clay pigeon at 40 yards or so. I shot a box of hornady 170's and Federal ($11/box) 150's and it seemed to like them both. I'm very excited to sit at a nice bench on a rest at a range and see what I can actually do with it.

On the second shot it failed to extract the case and I had to tap it out with a cleaning rod but there were zero problems after that. I really should have given it a good thorough cleaning before trying to shoot it but I'm too impatient. I definitely want to take it completely apart and clean and inspect every piece before I go any further, just to get familiar if nothing else.

Thanks for being excited with me and my first 30-30!

Glad you are happy with it! I shot an elk a few years ago with a 32WSpl and a 183gr cast bullet at quite a good distance; actually further than I should have, but still glad I took the shot. Proved to me that with proper placement on 400lb cows, 200 yards would be workable. Ah, but I don't see so well at 200 yards no more, so that is my restriction - how far can I really see the target. I just got my first 30-30 (30TK) last winter and am working up a load with lyman #311284 at 220gr. I don't have a mold and am rapidly running out of bullets, but it sure seems doable. My 2nd choice is a Saeco at 200gr+/- and I'm looking at that mold to purchase, maybe. Can't buy anything more until I get some work.

Good luck with your load development.
