Have cast up some hard RCBS 405gr bullets. According to my LBT hardness tester, BHN of 16. With a load of 2400 powder, my chrono shows 1442fps. With my alloy, bullets come out at 411gr. Sized .460 with gas check & then powder coated. Not resized after coating. Target set up at 100yds. Most all the game taken on the property is under 100yds. Most is actually taken under 50yds. This includes deer & elk. On my target , the two shots clustered together at top, were first fired from a cold barrel. The lower hole came from a warm barrel, the third shot. This rifle repeats this pattern , group after group. The first two shots are tight. The third is always out a bit, low. . Not enough to worry about when hunting, but still a bit annoying. This property is heavily forested, so you will note the tunnel slot I use to shoot to my target ( hard to see) . Had to cut down some trees to get this.
Scope used is, Redfield by Leupold, 2x7. Shooting done on 7X.

Had a 44mag 1894 that did the same thing. Tried all sorts of projectiles and powder combos and it would always throw a slight flyer.

Annoying for you but also lethal for your needs for sure!
... 3rd shot flier ... probably due to barrel heating especially with the light barrels of my BLRs ... if the animal is not down & out dead on the ground after the 2nd shot it's probably long gone anyway and it's time to review your when to take a 1st shot policy ... if I'm not SURE of the 1st shot I don't take it ... spray & pray has never been my style

So far, each season game is taken on the first shot. It is very rare for a second shot to be needed. First two shots are always right on. If I allow the barrel to cool in the shade for 15 or so minutes, the third shot will be touching the first two. The barrel on this rifles , just has this quirk with heat. Always , even when warm, can keep all shots inside two inches. So not a catastrophe. Very much hunt-able .

Yeah not much requires a follow up cast 45-70 round.

If ever get on another rifle hunt out west I’d like to take my lever gun.

I really don't think your going to have much problem with that bullet hunting elk or deer or even bear. The elk and deer I have taken never exceeds one shot to bring them down. Good luck on your hunts.
