I picked up a 99-m1 rifle over the weekend and wondered if I paid too much for it. It's in 90% (or better) condition, has the
rear sight, never had a scope mounted (no scratches), still has the swivels, and even has a sticker on the forend that reads
"solid American walnut". It was manufactured in 1971 and a safe queen for sure.

I paid $150.00....too much?

You knocked it outa the park on that one ! 8)

I foolishly passed on a desent one with rear site on it for $150.00 at the last Paris gunshow . There was a new in box one there too but I just about fell over when I saw the $399.00 on it!

Yep , them rear sites are a little hard to find . I been needing one myself to go on a M99 I got a few months ago .

Great little rifles , handy as a pocket on a shirt! Congrats .

Not sure I can add much?, I've only had mine now for about a month and a half now, yours sounds like it's in better shape than mine, I'd probably be stretching it a little if I said mine was 80%?, mine also still retains the original rear sight adding to the value but mine also has the optional squirrel engraved in the stock by Marlin, it was made in '69 and I payed $150 OTD for mine also, by the little I could gather over on RFC that's a real good deal!

I'm surprised that no one has said you need to post picture of it yet!? ;)
Proly looks like this'n?

I have a 989 M2 That needs some work . I was debating trying an after market stock but Numerich Arms has the original and I'm Leaning that way. I traded a beagle pup for it and a case pocket knive.
The stock was cracked at the pistol grip and some one had put a dry wall screw in it to hold it together. It is a good shooter with the open sights. I've had it since the early 90's and my youngest grandson has been shooting it and wants it restored. So I'd better get busy.

I got one in a pawn shop several months ago paid 60 bucks for it in 90% condition but it didnt work. When I took it apart I found a 22 mag stuck in the magazine guess thats why I got so cheap. It sure was acute little guy but being a lefty it sent the brass right into my arm they were kinda warm. I let it go at a recent gun show for 125. Probably too cheap but more than doubled my money

Mtn Hunter you did great on getting that rifle. The 99M1 is tube fed, of course, and its twin is the 989M2 which is box mag fed. The first was made from 1964-1978 and the second 1965-1978. The M2 is seen a lot less often. Someone asked about replacing a stock. Well, if you want to retain the original looks you want the walnut stock with the handguard on top. With some searching you might find the walnut stock. If you do not care about the original looks being retained you could other Marlin stocks that might fit some way with a bit of trimming. Actually, all the M1 is a Model 60 with a shorter mag tube and a slightly different stock configuration. The Glenfield 75 is like the M1 but without the handguard and is non-walnut wood and, of course, does not have the nice rear sight. The Glenfield 70 is like the M2 but without the handguard and is not walnut wood. What I suggest..if you have the money to pay a gunsmith, or can do it yourself, is get either one, or both of these rifles, and do not worry about that factory rear sight. A much better sight is a set of Tech Sights. Only you would have to pay someone, or do it yourself, drill and tap a small hole at the front of the barrel just like the Marlin 60 and Marlin 795 have for their front sight. Then you can put the Tech Sights front post sight on and the Tech Sights rear sight mounts easily on the receiver dovetail as Tech Sights do on the 60 and 795.

The second and third rifles from the bottom in the photo are my rifles...you may be able to see how nice the Tech Sights make the 99M1 look (2nd from bottom) in that makes the gun look even more military, so to speak.

BTW..off subject but since this photo includes other rifles here is the list top to bottom: M60 with walnut stock & Tech Sights, M795 Wood Laminated stock & Tech Sights, Glenfield M75 painted black, M99M1 with Tech Sights, 989M2, M70HC with Tech Sights.

Nice rifles Ithacabuff! I have a 989M2, I took the factory rear sight off and put a ole 4X Redfield scope on it for squirrel hunt'n and I like it very well. As far as changing out the factory rear sight's on my 99's I dont think I'd do that, I've got use to shooting with the factory sight over the years and I don't like change but thats good info on the Tech sight other folks may want to try them.

Heres a pic of the 989M2.

I got a 99M1 two weekends ago for $130. Its in 90% condition, lots of finish wear on the trigger guard, wood is great though. No rear sight but has a Redfield Widefield 2x7 scope on it. I figure I either bought the scope or the rifle and got the other for free.

Shoots great. Didn't bench shoot it but offhand we were popping soda cans and flipper targets like crazy.
