Marlin model 18 pump

I have a Marlin 18 pump with a barrel marked 22 Short and CB caps. I have been told that the 18 was never so marked and that the only explanation is that a barrel from a model 25 was put on the 18.

I have a model 25 also and have compared the 2 and they are so different that the explanation seems incorrect. The sights are different, the caliber stamping is in different font sizes and a different location on the barrels, and the 18 barrel is noticeably shorter than the 25 barrel (and has not been shortened). I am trying to make sense of why the 18 barrel has the CB caps markings but still looking for answers. Anyone have any thoughts on this? My thought was that 18s could have been so marked but everyone tells me not possible. Including a few pics showing some of the differences.

I wish I had some answers for you, but I have no knowledge about the pre-1950 manufactured Marlins. Hopefully someone will be along soon with some answers for you.
