What does anyone know about the 57M levermatic? There is one for sale in 22 mag, are they decent?

3030Man:

I found a 57M in 22 Magnum locally about two months ago, very good almost excellent condition. The seller said that it was a "good shooter" but that turned out to be an understatement. The gold bead had snapped off the front sight and I replaced it with an ivory bead insert from my spares box. The stock is beautiful and there is very little finish wear to the metal. It is a "second model" with the humpbacked steel receiver and regular rounded forend tip.

This is the first 22 Magnum I've owned since about 1980 when I sold a Colt New Frontier convertible revolver. I gave it a good cleanup inside and went to the range. Using CCI 40 gr solids I was hitting 20 oz empty plastic soda bottles time after time with the open sights. The short throw lever is like that of a Browning BL22 or Ruger 96/22, and one of the other shooters commented on how fast the 57M could be cycled. I've dropped about $35 on 22 WMR ammo in the past two months. ;D

Very fast, very accurate, kinda funky looking, all fun.

HAGGLE ;D

I'd have beat 'em down to $250-275 :D

Words to haggle by...
"It's JUST a little ole .22" ;)
"Man, this thing looks like it was rode hard & put away wet..."
"Got a bore light handy??" (I usually carry my own)
I'd give ya... (half of the marked price) for it"

Even a little beat up...it'd be worth $250-275 if it'd cycle ammo. A fast sanding, stain & Spar Urethane clearcoat...and ya got a Serious Shooter :)

I've seen discussions of differences in the configuration of the 57M. Is there any way of determining near what part of the 10 or so year run (1959 - 1969 in one reference) the gun was made? This is not critical info, but I would just like to know.

Mine does not have the aluminum shroud on the receiver (all steel). The front of the stock is rounded. There are no white line spacers on the butt plate or grip cap.

Also, when I got it, the "bullseye" was missing on the stock. I just bought a replacement (big bucks, after shipping/handling/minimum purchase fee) for a little piece of plastic) from Midway. Does the bullseye get epoxied in, then rounded to match the stock contour?

I looked at a Revelation Model the other day at a pawn shop for $125.00. Did Revelation sell Marlin 57"s under their brand name? Maybe I should have bought it. It looked pretty good for $125.00. It had a safety that locked the lever and a very short throw, tubular magazine and a receiver that looked a lot like a Model 60. I didn't get the model #.

I just picked up a second model 57 magnum for the princely sum of $100, complete with a Nikon Monarch 1.5-4x. The bluing had a good bit of surface rust, but a few minutes with a wire wheel and some gun oil and it looks almost as good as new. I still need to refinish the stock....or not......it's gonna make a great truck gun. The TKBs are gonna be in trouble when I see 'em.

I'd go back and look at it again :) Get that Model # for us...we can track almost anything with a model # :)

I found a Marlin 57 M at GB for $450. It appears to be in very good condition. When it arrives I'll look it over good and let everyone know it was a find or if I am a fool. :questionmark:
Not sure which one you got but I've been watching these and want an honest shooter (dings ok but rust isn't) haven't seen one yet go for 450 (including shipping/transfer )

Please post back up cause I really want to know if these are accurate/reliable

Openspaces, I did get the rifle, its in 95% condition on metal and wood. I did a detail strip and clean and learned waaay tooo much about the trigger group. The accuracy wasn't anything to write home about so I went back into it. The front sling mount was pressing against the tube, and the tube against the barrel. Accuracy improved to about 2 +/- inches at 100 yards after I found that problem. I'm really quite pleased with it, its a keeper for sure. Best wishes, Len

57 M Ejection issues

I recently aquired a 57M with a nice 4XW Sears - Ted Williams Scope on it from my Fathers collection. The scope has an oval view, I really like the whole set up ! However after loading a few rounds in it to see how it cycled, to my surprise, it did not eject rounds. I unscrewed two screws to remove stock and flushed action with Rem Action Cleaner. I cannot get it to eject, rounds just lay above next feed and cause jam issue. I'm guessing it needs new extractor if available ?
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Found some info about a 57M that failed to eject after a scope base was mounted on it. It was bouncing the round back into the receiver. You may want to remove the scope and mount and see if that lets the rounds eject...

Got my 22 WMR for $200 off AL, local, F2F. Interestingly to me, pre serial #. Shoots great for 22WMR, 1”-1.5” at 50 yds depending on ammo. 24” barrel seem a little overkill and I think would handle better at about 20” but not about to hack it. Kinda beat up and pockmarked but I shoot my guns so probably better.
Had extraction problem for a while. Turned out dry firing had pushed up lump of steel in chamber that really locked fired cases in place. I don’t generally dry fire rimfires but there is no indication when you have fired last round and short stroke is really fun and fast, so it’s easy to by accident dry fire occasionally. Everybody I’ve let ry it has dry fired it at least once. Thinking of looking for a fix, it’s just a little less fun having to worry about how many rounds I loaded vs. how many I’ve fired, or ejecting unfired rounds just to check, etc. Also, action is a bit loosey-goose, this is no Swiss watch.
All that said, I won’t be letting this one go anytime soon, probably ever. Super fun, a more modern better built one would be awesome but until then maybe someone knows a good smith who could give mine some tweaks?
