Hey guys,

I've got a Marlin 1895 coming in in the next two weeks. My plan is upgrading the sights with the full length rail by XS systems.

My question here is, does the XS systems rear sight also work with the std Marlin factory front sight ? I guess I would need to change both probably...............

Other question is : is there a way to get a winged rear sight for the XS sights rail to offer that ghost ring sight some protection ? If so, does any of you have the parts # or can advise me how to do a mod ?

TYIA,

Pete

Maybe you have seen them and decided you still want the xs sights, but just in case. You may want to take a look in our Industry Partners forum and take a good look at "Skinner Sights". I know for a fact that his lo-pro rear sight will work with your factory front sight, as it is what I have on mine. I have Skinner sights on all of my Marlins with peeps and could not be happier.

I just got a new STBL. I wanted to set it up the same way, but there was not a winged sight that I found to fit on the full length rail. I went with the shorter XS rail and the DRC winged sight set, ordered from Brownell's. I like the way it worked out, and really like the protection of the wings on the back sight, as I have been known to be a bit tough on rifles. here are pics of my setup.

I know you will lose a little rail space, but not much. If you are using a red dot sight and want to move it closer to your eye, this may present a problem, but with a scout setup, it is perfect in my opinion. Good luck, I love mine.

I have an 1895M (450 Guide Gun) & have it set up EXACTLY the same as trdigger has his (right down to the Burris & Warne QR rings. Trdigger is obviously a man of great taste & wisdom ;D) & couldn't be happier. Before I got my 2.75x Burris I had a 30mm Ultradot red dot sight on it & the location of the scout mount worked great with it also. I personally like the XS (DRC) front sight much better than the factory sight.
All in all I couldn't be happier with the setup. It works perfect for me here in Alaska. 0-200 yds is a no-brainer with 420gr hardcast. If my current rifle were destroyed & I were to build another rifle for my hunting here it would be a duplicate if this one.

Trdigger, your pic looks like Alaska, maybe Canada or the Yukon. Where are you located?

Thanks for the good taste compliment, I love this gun and feel the same as you about a replacement. I live in Western WA, and the pic is on Riffe Lake in Lewis County. It feels very Alaska-ish, hunting from Jet Boats, lots of thick timber etc. No big bears though, just little black ones. But, some say there are other big hairy things in these parts.

Some beautiful & rugged country in WA!
I spent my 1st 28 yrs living in south eastern (Klamath Falls) Oregon, & from 18yrs old on I was working in the woods in central/western Oregon, & northern CA. I am a believer in those big hairy things. I won't get into it but have had a couple of goose bumpy experiences.

My advice is go with The Skinner Sight! That will be my next purchase. I had an XS Rear Sight that adjusted to far left and I munted the screw on it. Sent it back to XS and they said they would send me a replacement for free. I was pretty happy with that. It's been months now and many emails, still no sight! Take that for what it is worth I suppose. The Skinner looks like it profiles better with the gun anyway.

gud2go, not staking one brand against another as I'm sure Skinners are great (never heard anything bad about them!). BUT, when I messed up a piece on my XS Scout mount, I called them to see how to order & where to send money (my fault on the part). They had a new part set out the next day at no charge to me. Even appologized that it was too late to get it out the same day. Had my part here in Alaska in 3 days.
I don't doubt your story a bit, but I'm real surprised & baffled ???

There are a lot of options these days for peep sights. XS, Skinner, WWG, Brockman, Williams and others.

In the FWIW category, I believe the wings on these sights is much more a cosmetic thing than serve any actual purpose. You are probably far more likely to snap the screws holding on the sight before you damage the aperture stud or sight itself.

Glad to hear that,Eli. I just bought XS sights and rail for my ABL and was wondering if I should have bought some w/wings.
Sure like the Brockman's,though.

I agree Erik that the wings are more in our head than needed. I ran the standard XS Rear on several Marlins and never ever ran into any problems, and I didn't baby them.

They do look pretty cool though, especially the LPA rear that Grizzly custom guns is putting on those custom marlins.

One of the reasons I went with the winges XS on mine was the looks, no question. I really prefer their appearance. Enough so that apearance alone would have justified it to me. BUT, that aperature standing up all nekid & proud just looks too vaulnerable to me. I try not to abuse my guns, but my guide gun gets used hard. Backpack trips, canoe trips with as much portaging as paddeling, etc & I want the extra measure of protection. I REALLY like the looks of the Brockman winged front sight & would like to have one some day, but the XS front sight is thick enough & long enough that I don't think you could bend it with a hammer so I'm not worried for it.

I have virtually the same setup on my ABL, and love the look and "feel."

The protective ears-while potentially cosmetic-work so much faster for me because it narrows my eye's "scope" for quick, close in work.

The first thing my eye picks up while sighting is the target, with a flash of the front sight, and my eye(s) will tell my brain whether the front sight is in the "box" and time to fire. If time allows, the sighting step can be slowed down, with time to find the ring and confirmthe front sight is at least within the open ring, another quick shot.

Again, if time & distance allow, I use proper sighting.

I don't understand this post. No disrespect but I don't get what you are saying. :-\

I love the huge amount of choices we have for upgrade iron sights now days, truely something for everybody.

One thing about the winged rear peeps and winged front posts I forgot to mention is that for me, it is too much junk in my sight picture. When I am using ghost rings, I am making quick shots on moving game (most of the time) I need there to be as little for my eyes to have to discern as possible.

If I understand him correctly, he's saying that for really up close & fast the wings almost act like a huge ghost ring.
I'm on the opposire end of both Marlinslap & MattPair. One uses the wings for reference & one considers them clutter.
I never even notice the wings in my sight picture & they don't slow me down at all. Guess we are all built different. I can't understand why anyone would want more than 18.5" of barrel on a Marlin, but there are some strange folks out there ;D

Indeed there are... :)...the 22" barrel balances better, for me at least.

To read the "fine print" there...press and hold the "ctrl" key and press the "+" key about 5 or 6 times :D

Hey guys,

I just wanted to let you know that the first and second stages of the upgrade of my Guide Gun have been completed.

My Guide Gun sports now an XS Sight Systems lever rail with Xs front sight and a ghost ring rear. It was a nice and easy job, as XS Sights did a great job of doing things right.

In the second stage, I put on a WWG big loop lever, which also went right in without ( ! ) any filing and fitting. The only thing that needed to be changed over was the lever plunger assembly. No worries there either.

The only thing I would have liked would have been getting the lever in blued finish to match the Marlin's finish. The matte black is not that bad looking either.

So far I'm pretty impressed with the quality and close tolerances of these aftermarket parts. Both companies can be proud of the products they produce. I would not have any problem recommending both companies.

After the whole upgrade job was complete, I tested the Guide Gun for function with two A-Zoom dummy rounds. It worked flawlessly with no hang-ups and no scratching.

Last thing I did was installing a leather sling, now I'm just waiting for a leather buttstock shell holder, and then call it good. The shell holder is already on order.
