I have a question on manufacture dates for a couple of different Marlins. First is a Model 94, in 25-20 serial number 8014xx, as best I can tell the first number is a 8 and not a 3, but even with a magnifying glass I am not 100% sure. Second is a 1894C 357/38 Serial number, 92041xxx. Number is on the left side of the receiver. Barrel markings are," The Marlin Frearms Co. North Haven CT. U.S.A." JM or a bad stamping of JM is on the left side of the barrel, just forward of the receiver, with no REP on the right. When was this gun made, was it pre Remington or considered as such. Any more information on either firearm is appreciated. Thanks

I have, and thank you, with either a 8 or a 3, for the 94 as the first number, the answer is "out side the range of our data base." As close as that site will allow is between 1906 and 1948.

.Six numbers 8014xx, you are correct. I think it begins with an 8, but as I posted I cannot be 100% sure. Also being stamped a model 94, not 1894, leads me to think it is a later gun. As best I can find model 94 marks began in 1905 and they were marked 1984 before that. This gun is marked 94, and a 800,000 range serial number? Did they go that high? I just don't know.

Thank you, I have just learned a lot. Let me share what I do know about this gun. I bought it at a yard sale about 4 or 5 years ago. The fella told me had had bought the gun from what he thought was the original owner. Bought it the year he got married and " that would be 60 years this fall." IIRC that would have been 1948. Told me about the bear he had killed with it, of all the hours it has spent in a saddle scabbard. Hasn't much if any original finish, and minor pitting, the front sight is a silver dime cut in half, and the rear sight has had the V deepened a bit, action functions fine, I have fired it once with a copper plated bullet. I have found some older plated bullets, from what I have read the softer steel in these old guns should only have lead put down the barrel so dies are in order. Again, thank you so much, you have made my day.

" It was a small bear" he said, still A bear with a 25-20? Probably all that was available. Here is the fella with the gun and the home made scabbard his wife made. We happen to have a camera handy and I ask it I could take his picture with it. I think that is his wife, but my wife thinks it was his daughter, not certain on that.. Notice the light spot on the receiver? A screw had been replaced using a common household screw, which I ordered from Borwnells and have since rereplaced. Other than that, and a little cleaning it is still as in the picture.
