It's hard to say without some good pics.

 

I understand that but I have no way of doing good ones and was hoping for an estimated value on my description. Also wood is very good and has the pistol grip style stock.

 

The 26" was standard, so the barrel could be cut down. The PG stock is extra, is it checkered?

 

If you give me the whole ser#, I can look up the factory record

It is not checkered. Sn is 222489

 

I believe it has been re barreled because it says The Marlin Firearms Company, and says nothing about smokeless steel

Thank you very much, atleast i didnt get taken at $425. Is there anyplace I could find a barrel to match the original in a 30-30 caliber for a reasonable price that would allow me to put it back to its original form?

 

Wow how do you guys find out this info? I have been looking for days and could only find the ship date. Is this something I have access to without stepping on any toes, because I would like to start collecting these old lever guns.

 

The 25-36 is the hardest to find! Keep an eye on Gunbroker and Ebay they do show up from time to time. I got a NOS 45-90 for the 1895 a while back on GB

 

The factory records only go up to around 355000 in 1906, after that it is guess work. The Marlin collectors Ass. has a copy of the records, become a member and they will look them up for ya.

So if my Dad has a 1893 Marlin serial number 443XXX, it is too far out to find details on the rifle? It is a .25-36 and factory engraved.

That is correct the factory records that survive only go to around 355000. Their are a few engraved guns around yours that I have seen.

 

Ok. Thanks for the info. Really wish there were factory records, but Brophy's lists enough details about it. It is the Monarch of the Glen engraving. I wish I could see who the engraver was because it is beautiful. I've seen other examples of engraved Marlins and the detail in this one is unbelievable.

 

A factory engraved 1893...socom you deserve fifty lashes four not sharing pics of that one!!!

You might try contacting Pauline Muerrle, she was the last factory engraver for Winchester and is an expert!! She may be able to tell who engraved your gun by studying pics?

I didn't want to hijack the OP's thread. But CJ posted my original post from 2008 that shows pics of the 1893. It got me hooked on Marlins. 5 years later, my safe has 12 Marlins and my Dad added about 12 too.
