once a year ( unless I get caught in the rain) I clean the tube. run a waxed patch through. a dry patch. a patch litely oiled. the spring, just a lite spray of lube. thats it. I would flitz the brass follower.

 

For mine, I just wipe the outside with a silicone cloth and run a bore snake down the inside just to remove any residue.

After I clean the magazine I use Rem spray dry lube then run a fairly tight patch. One 336 I bought used had surface rust in the magazine, after I cleaned it I used clp then moped the surface dry. Has worked for me so far.

What is the brand of silicon spray that you use?

 

Clean with some alcohol to get any crud off and leave a clean dry surface. Lube with a dry slide lube, inside and out. Give the spring a cleaning and spray as well if dirty.

 

I keep the tube dry, clean and dry. Same with the bore. Never oiled a bore, unless the rifle is to be unused for a while. Dry bore, much like me.

 

I just run a dry bore snake through the tube. I polish the magazine with 0000 steel wool then give it a very very very thin coat of (automotive/axle) grease. I think I remember that from a Brownells youtube. But the grease is optional as a dry brass magazine is fine too.

 

I am a maintenance freak on all stuff. So I clean my guns pretty well. Lesson from my maternal grandfather. So here is my trick for the 39a. My tube is really hard to pull out. If you have a hard pulling tube, put on a pair of surgical gloves. Gives your grip more authority.

 

I lightly oil mine with Slip 2000

 

Haven't you heard? Magazine tube maintenance is no longer necessary now that we have self cleaning followers. :flute:

My practice is to take it down after hunting season, run a patch with some solvent through(amazing the amount of crud that builds up in there), wait for it to dry, then wax inside and out. Spring and follower get waxed as well. I wax the whole gun, I hunt in what's basically a swamp, rain/snow usually happens during the season. You don't want oil in the tube, it'll be a dirt magnet. I also have put stock finish on the stock inletting and the inside of the forearm, Marlin never finished those, then wax those areas as well. That's for a hunting gun, if it's just going to the range, you don't need that.
