I'm contemplating scopes for my 336 and looking at the Leupold 1-4 HOG. Price seems very reasonable..........maybe too reasonable. I'd be interested in any comments re. this or similar scopes. My limited budget is a big consideration here, but I don't want to short change myself either.

I think that is a great little scope for all levers, good size and enough magnification for the 35's range. Good choice if the retical isn't too "busy" for you. DP

I LOVE the PigPlex reticle. Yeah it says "PIG PLEX" on the posts, but it is one of my favorite reticles I've looked through. As a matter of fact, when I purchased a VX-R 2-7X33 later on, I went with a Balistics Firedot because it was the closest I could find to the PigPlex.

The normal VX-HOG goes for around $230 at most places and has a 1" maintube.

The VX-R HOG steps up the price considerably to the $500 price point mentioned above. It also has a 30mm maintube.

I have three VX-Hog scopes and really like them. As said above, they work great with a lever gun. I have them mounted on pistol caliber rifles, however, IMHO, they don't affect the balance and feel of the rifle. With the right mounting rings and base you can get good eye relief. View is crisp and clear. There is a seller on eBay that often has good prices on them as I couldn't find them locally anywhere. I like to see scopes in person before I buy. BrassPro counter guy told me there was no such thing as a VX-Hog. I asked to see their Leupold catalog and pointed them out to him. Took a chance on the VX-Hog and it worked out great. I believe that there are a couple different reticles available with them?

This is what it looks like.
The Leupold "Hog" sereis and the VXR "Hog" is two different scopes.
The 1-4X24 Hog series is a 1" tube like this one.
The reticle is very handy for use in thick woods and close
quarters hunting as one would normally use a lever gun for.
The holdover dots are designed for a 30-06, however,
there is no reason why one could not use them on a 30-30
or 35Rem if he took the time to figure where they are at
farther distances.
I think this is one of the best scopes on the market for the price
and works very well on a Marlin.
It is very clear and bright and I like the reticle.

I paid $225.00 for min last summer from Midway USA
and shipping was free.

Any Leupold is a great scope. I have quite a few.

On my levers, the scope I most commonly mount is the Weaver Classic V 1-3X20mm dual reticle. Midway has them for $189.99 with free shipping. They are nice, quality scopes.

The hog plex reticle is a little busy for me although I do have a dangerous game scope on one of my heavy rifles with a similar three post reticle. It does make for quick target acquisition.

take a look also at........

Leupold makes their vx-1 shotgun scope in 1x4 with either a heavy duplex or turkey reticle which is sort of a cross between the duplex and pig Plex without the extra hash marks. About $10 cheaper that the hog scope.
I just went through this exercise recently......and ended up purchasing a Vortex Diamondback HP 2-8.......they are new.....absolutely bright/crystal ED glass, BOD reticle and 4-5 inches of ER which is amazing........I almost went for the Pig Reticle.......Midway has them at 249.......

On my 1894/44 Mag I have the Leupold 1-4x20mm Heavy Duplex which has a 1" tube and none of the electronic stuff to screw up.
Those heavy posts really stand out in low light conditions.
My 336s (35 Rem, 30-30 Win) have Leupold 2-7x33mm scopes on them.

If you want a plain 2-7X33 low-profile scope in a Leupold
It's hard to beat the 2-7X33 Rifleman. It is only slightly higher
in price than the 1-4X24 Hog series, and is just as clear and bright.

I went with these because every small, low profile scope you see
on sale out there now is designed for a AR 223 or has rediculous
high target turret adjustments.
The 1-4 Hog was the only straight 1" tube I saw in the Midway sale
flier at the time that wasn't advertised as scope with holdover bars
in it for a 223...other than the Vortex, which had tall turrets.

Some people like doodads, clutter and blang. I get the Zombie thing, it can be fun, I just don't need a neon green AR. But they sell them. The Ballistic Fire Dot reticle is on available Leupold scopes is close with out all the Piggy Piggy look at me stuff.

Yeah, it's a little cheesy, but you forget about it when a big porker is staring you down the barrel. :)

I put a vx-r hog on my 444s.found it a bit busy at first , but it seems to put you on target with the heavy posts.i thought the red dot might be a bit of a gimmick ,but I have grown to like it in really low light.my 2 cents.

My VX Hog is probably my favorite scope. The size is just right. It took me a few minutes to get used to the pig plex reticle, you know, the one that actually says "pig plex" right there in the middle of the scope, which could be confusing if you're shooting at a deer... But hey, even counting that, it's great.
